ABOUT PUTTING NOTICES IN COMMUNIT-E
I'm happy to put most notices, sent by residents, in the newsletter.
However,
to ensure that your notice gets in, I'd urge you to send it as far
in advance
of the event as possible. I try to publish a newsletter about
once a week,
but I don't guarantee it. My receiving the notice three or four weeks
in
advance is not too early.
NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING COORDINATOR
Just as there is a Neighborhood Service Coordinator (Phil Heinrich,
282-7952, phil.heinrich@dc.gov) there is also a Neighborhood Planning
Coordinator -- Robert Collins
(442-7617, robert.collins@dc.gov). These folks and this neighborhood
coordinator concept came out of the Mayor's Citizen Summit, held last
year.
They are part of a team, representing various city departments, to deal
with
problems, planning, etc. in each area. Both Phil Heinrich and Robert
Collins
discussed their activities at the last ANC3E meeting. They meet with
a team
of representatives, including 2D Captain Anthony Poteat (282-0042,
apoteat@aol.com), to discuss various issues and problems in this area.
The
city is divided into 39 Neighborhood Clusters. We are Cluster 11.
Just so you know where you are, most recipients of this newsletter are
in
Ward 3, ANC3E or
ANC3F, 2nd District Police, PSA 202, Cluster 11, and either AU
Park,
Friendship Heights, or Tenleytown.
Phil Heinrich said that the best number to call to request most city
services
is 727-1000. If you make a request and nothing happens after a reasonable
amount of time, contact him.
For most police calls, the best number is 311. If it's a crime in progress
or
other emergency, call 911. If you are unhappy with the service
you receive,
call Commander Peter Newsham,
282-0042. If he's not there, ask for a Captain or the Watch Commander.
Or
e-mail him on MPDC2DCMDR@aol.com.
The coordinators and their teams are working on the more long range,
chronic
problems.
SEX OFFENDERS LISTED
Class A sex offenders, those convicted of violent sex crimes or serious
sex
offenses against minors, are listed with photograph and address on
the MPD
web site at www.mpdc.org. There is also a logbook with the same information
at the 2D desk for public perusal. In addition to the Class A offenders,
the
paper logbook also lists offenders of less serious sex offenses.
This is DC's response to the national effort that produced Megan's Law,
named
for Megan Kanka, a 7 year old New Jersey child who was murdered by
a
convicted sex offender who lived across the street.
The purpose of the registry is to let residents know if there is someone
living or working nearby who should cause them to be extra careful.
At the
same time, the police are adamant that they will not tolerate any kind
of
vigilantism or harassment of offenders who have been convicted
and deemed by
the courts to have been punished.
For additional information, go to the MPD web site. There was also a
Washington Post story on this in the March 7 Metro Section.
Sgt. Robert Panizari, from 2D, led the Headquarters team who developed
this
program.

CLEAN-UP DAY ON WINDOM PLACE
From: Abbott1229@erols.com (Richard Abbott)
I wonder if any other residents of the area are disgusted by the trash
strewn along Windom Place in the block east of the 7-11, and in fact
all the
way down to 38th St., where I live. I would like some help from
people in
the area, especially residents of Windom Place, to do a one-hour clean
up on
Saturday, March 24, from 11 AM to Noon. That's really all it
would take if
5 to 10 people helped out and brought garden rakes, gloves, and some
plastic
bags. Most of this mess comes from the 7-11, so I got the name
and address
of the owner and plan to write him, asking for one employee to help
on that
day, and to police the area periodically in the future. My idea
is that
once it is clean, people will be less inclined to add more trash to
the
mess. Only a theory, but I think it works to some degree!
I have adopted
the east side of Tenley Circle and do a periodic pick-up of trash there,
and
it actually looks better lately. If interested, please e-mail
me at:
abbott1229@erols.com. I plan to leave flyers on the
doors of people in
the first block asking them to help out. FYI, I'm the guy that
got the Tree
and Landscape Division to plant about 75 trees in empty tree boxes
in the
neighborhood last year and this year.

Does anyone know a knowledgeable and reliable ceramic tile installer?
We
have talked with two companies -- Nash Floors and Metropolitan Bath
& Tile.
If anyone has experience with these companies or someone else you would
recommend, we'd appreciate hearing from you.
**** From: aselvaggio@erols.com (Selvaggio)
Can anyone recommend a careful, yet not too expensive, person or company
to
do a spring and fall cleanup in our small yard. , i.e., rake leaves,
put down
mulch and fertilizer and trim some shrubs?
**** From: aodean@erols.com (Andrea Dean)
I wonder if anyone has a gardener/yard-cleaner-upper who they like.
I'd be
grateful for recommendations.
**** From: BondMT@state.gov (Bond, Michele T)
My family has relied on Thomas E. Clark, Inc. for plumbing and heating
for
40 or 50 years. It is a fine firm, with reliable, well-trained
staff.
Recently the company gave us another reason to praise them: The
hot water
heater at my parents' house in Bethesda conked out. It is quite
old, so my
dad figured it was time to replace it. He called Thos. Clark
and asked them
to send someone out with a new heater. When the plumber examined
the old
heater, he said there was a "pin-point leak," easily repaired at a
fraction
of the cost of a new hot water heater. Thomas Clark can be reached
at
301-608-0550.

HONDA SPOTTED -- POLICE LOOKING FOR
From: noble@olg.com (Doris Noble)
I think I saw the green Honda drive in my alley today as I was
gardening. It has a piece of the front bumper missing on the driver's
side. They drove through the alley. Unfortunately, I had not
read about
the Honda or I would have taken down the license plate. They
drove by
around 3-4pm. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

TOWER UPDATE -- LAST MONDAY'S HEARING
From: CooperJM@aol.com
Last night's zoning hearing was a real success. Read Ann Loikow's
description below. Please note that she is asking us to phone
Council
Members, especially Patterson, Fenty, Chavous, Ambrose and Mendelson,
to
attend the next roundtable session on March 19. Only David Catania
was
represented last night.
And, on another note, MANY THANKS TO JO ANN GINSBERG, Chief of Staff
for
Kathy Patterson, who worked very hard with DPW to GET OUR SIDEWALK
BACK in
front of the tower site!!!!!!! If you haven't been by lately, take
a look!
The fence has been moved back and there is a temporary asphalt sidewalk,
once
again allowing safe passage for pedestrians, and also clearing the
obstructions from the long-suffering merchants in that block.
Also-- There is lots more information on our fabulous website,
so keep an
eye on it. I don't send out every health report I receive, for
example, to
our community list, but Tim Weber is putting all the interesting ones
up on
our site. Check it out.
And while you are there, sign the electronic petition, if you haven't
signed
our recent paper one. Ann Aeichenberger and Stephanie Kinney
suggested the
e-petition, and have also devoted much time to attending recent ANC
meetings
to provide community updates on our Tower efforts. MANY THANKS
to you, Ann &
Stephanie, for your community education efforts. This is so important,
and
greatly appreciated.

From: Ann Loikow
I just wanted to thank everyone who came and testified (22) or came
and
deferred until March 19 (23 residents) so we could get "Broadcast Blues"
shown. I think it was a very successful hearing. The Commissioners
(Carol
Mitten, chair; Anthony
Hood, Kwasi Holman, and Herbert Franklin, Architect of the Capitol;
John
Parsons, NPS, was absent) appeared to be very interested in the case,
asked good questions, and stayed to see, and appeared engrossed in,
the
video. As far as I can tell, the industry reps and their lawyers
did
not stay for the video.
The next session of the roundtable will be Monday, March 19 at 7 p.m.
We
are going to have to make sure we have an equally strong series of
witnesses. I suspect the industry will be better represented
that they
were tonight.
Councilmember Catania was the only one represented tonight. Please
call
your Councilmembers, in particular Patterson, Fenty, Chavous, Ambrose,
and Mendelson, and see if we can get some or all of them to testify
at
the March 19th hearing.
