COMMUNIT-E GOES DOWN FOR A WHILE
Next week I plan to switch from AOL to Starpower. I will need to learn
a
whole new way of sending and receiving e-mail, so I would ask that
you not
send anything to me until I put out the next issue of COMMUNIT-E under
my new
address. Many thanks to all of you who shared your thoughts on e-mail
providers with me. They were very helpful suggestions and I looked
at a
number of servers before I decided to go with Starpower. In the end,
I
selected it because of the cable TV and the high speed internet components.
As before, the end of this newsletter is marked. Let me know if you
didn't
get all of it.
ESCAPEE CAUGHT
The juvenile whom I mentioned in the last issue of COMMUNIT-E has been
caught
by the DC Police. This is the young man who was arrested for two rapes
and
robbery and then escaped. The police were allowed to show his picture
but not
give out his name or other information that might have helped
the community
help the police to catch him sooner. This situation suggests
that it might
be time to rethink some of the secrecy laws and regulations surrounding
some
juveniles who commit violent and vicious crimes.

WINDOM PLACE CLEANUP A SUCCESS
From: abbott1229@erols.com (Richard Abbott)
The clean-up of Windom Place on Saturday March 24, announced in Communit-E
and also in the NW Current, was a big success. Ten people living
in the area
turned out with rakes, shovels, and plastic bags to pick up the quantities
of
trash which had accumulated in the 3900 block, just east of the 7-11
on
Wisconsin.
Since much of the trash appears to come from the 7-11, we had written
to the
owner of the franchise, Abraham Habte, asking for his cooperation.
After
some further phone calls to the 7-11 Regional Office, Mr. Habte responded
in
fine style by contributing the time of one of his employees to help
in the
cleanup, then inviting us to have lunch at his store. He pointed
out that
people discard wrappers and cups despite the fact that there are some
six
trash cans in and around his store, including four which he had purchased.
Mr. Habte agreed to have an employee check the area outside the store
periodically and pick up discarded trash, and to be sure that the cans
were
emptied regularly. He also pointed out that the prevailing wind
blows paper
into Windom from the convenience store across Wisconsin and from along
the
avenue. It is the hope of our little band of volunteers that
passersby will
be less inclined to trash the area now that it is clean, and that residents
of the block will pick up trash as it (inevitably) appears. Thanks
to all
who participated in this community action!

ROBBERY ON KANAWHA STREET
From: maudlin@alum.mit.edu (Robert V. Maudlin)
The following report is from Lt. Eaves, Commander PSA 201, 2nd District,
MPD: At about 6:00pm on March 21, 2001, a 63 year old female was about
enter
her home in the 2800 block of Kanawha St NW, when she heard the sound
of
someone running behind her. As she turned to see who it was, she was
immediately
grabbed by a subject who snatched her purse and fled in a waiting
vehicle. The Suspect is described as a Black male, 6', 180 lbs, in
his late
20's.
At the time of the offense he was wearing a blue sweater, dark colored
pants and brown frame glasses. The suspect fled in a light blue mini
van. No
further description is available at this time.
There is some good news to report, at about 7:50PM, the Second District
received a call for a suspicious subject in the 2800 block of 28th
St
NW. The caller had heard of the robberies in the area and believed
that the
person matched the description. The suspect was stopped and a records
check revealed that he was wanted in Fairfax County. Upon being searched,
officers recovered a pellet pistol from the suspects waistband and
several
credit
cards in the names of recent robbery victims in his pocket. Once
interviewed at the Second District, the suspect confessed to 4 robberies
along
Connecticut Avenue. Additionally, the suspect matches the description
given in several more robberies.

ANIMALS IN THE 'HOOD
**** From: Darnot@aol.com
One last thought to go along with the wandering pets... it is vital
to have
all pets up to date on their shots! rabies and distemper (Feline
Panleukopenia Virus (FPV)) most importantly. The latter is a killer
and the
inoculation is full-proof. shots for feline aids (fiv) and feline leukemia;
(felv) should also be considered for outside cats.

Re the deer --- they live in Rock Creek Park --- there are a zillion
there
and come up through the Glover Archbold park and through Battery Kemble
Park.
We have seen deer on 42nd Street, behind Janney School!
**** From: Millhuang@aol.com (Lois Miller)
I was wondering if anyone could identify the source of the Pet signs
in our
neighborhood regarding "Scoop your Pet's Poop $50.00 fine?" I have
seen them
on several streets and have wondered how to get some on our street.
I almost
step in poop every day in front of my house and am getting tired of
this.
(4300 Block of 43rd Street) We have a dog and are always
conscientious of
other people's property. I think however that some people need a reminder.
PARKING IN THE 'HOOD
From: Kathleen.Reilly@westgroup.com
I seem to recall reading in Communit-E a while back about a plan to
provide
temporary parking permits for the Tenleytown/AU Park area for housecleaners,
nannies, and other household help who visit frequently and stay for
more
than two hours. Did anything ever come of this, and if not, do you
have any
suggestions for me on how to get a parking permit for my nanny?
HELP NEEDED FROM THE CITY
**** From: CRABLE@nmb.gov (Stephen&Deborah Crable)
Could someone help us find the correct person to contact about getting
a kerb
installed on the west side of 43rd street N.W.? We have never had a
kerb, and
now that the street is dug up from the gas works we know they will
repave, so
we thought it would be an opportune time to get one installed. I have
called
the Mayor's city assistance number and been referred to another department,
(Investigations and Inspections), and left a message for a John Flemming
but
have not heard back. I was referred to his office I believe by the
Transportation and Construction dept. Anyway, I know it's not a quick
process
but thought while the gas works were still going on we might have time
to
organize this. Any help would be appreciated.

HECHINGER / SEARS REVISITED
From: carolynlong@earthlink.net (Caroline Long)
I know the topic of the Sears/Hechingers building is supposed to be
closed,
but I have one more comment. Do we REALLY want a mega-hardware store
there--Home Depot or Lowes? Having heard such great things about Lowes,
we
drove out to the one in Gaithersburg and found it to be a big ugly
box,
surrounded by a vast
parking lot, having pretty much the same stuff as our former Hechingers,
and
staff that wasn't a bit better trained or knowledgeable.
I would much rather see a smaller, high-quality hardware store like
Strosniders occupying part of the building, and the rest of it made
into a
mini-mall with lots of shops and restaurants. A creative architect
can work
with
that building and make it look great and still be within the Historic
Preservation guidelines.
