leave a garage door open or unlocked and walk away from it, even for

for such treasure troves.

LOOKING FOR AIR CONDITIONER
From: Copingptnr@aol.com (Susan Beale)
I am working with a man (not in this neighborhood) who has a terminal
illness and no income. He is living in a shed, and needs
a room air conditioner. The shed is starting to heat up, and
this is bad for his illness. If you can help, please call me at work:
Susan Beale, (703) 538-2065.
ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW ON AU BUILDING
Subject: Get used to it
From: "Richard L. Paul" <rlp@wamu.org>
Organization: WAMU-FM
I am going to vent here and I apologize if I come off sounding overly
strident. I also realize this is a fight no one can "win," but I
cannot for the life of me understand a community that can't abide an
ARTS CENTER coming into its neighborhood. The
attitude around here seems to be "Heaven forbid anyone should change
anything in this area!" Would you truly be happier to
have the Cassell
Center -- a two story corrugated iron shed -- continue to occupy that
hilltop? If not an Arts Center, what would be acceptable
to people around here? We don't want Giant to give us a bigger
store on Macomb Street. We don't want Home Depot to
modify the old Hechingers building. We didn't want AU to replace
an abandoned shopping mall with a Law School. Good
thing the construction on the National Cathedral is already grandfathered
in or people would be trying to stop that too. You live
in a city. You knew it was a city when you moved here.
Get used to it. OK, I'm finished now. But this kind of thinking
really
burns me up.
MORE ON TELEPHONE PROBLEM
From: "Greg Werth" <gregwerth@erols.com>
I saw Stephanie Yoffee's note in the April 18th issue of COMMUNIT-E.
I live on the 4100 block of Garrison Street, just off
of the 5000 block of Wisconsin Avenue, and have had similar problems
with Verizon. They are completely clueless and
incompetent. Find attached a running file which I compiled while trying
to get my problems resolved. I went through the file and
bolded the names and
phone number for various contacts at Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic).
I hope this helps. The only way to get the problem fixed
is to call every day and escalate up the management chain.
(NB: It was a long and exhausting list of things that Greg Werth went
through. I have not published it here, but if you are
interested, I'm sure he would be pleased to share it with you. -- KS)
ANIMALS IN THE 'HOOD
*** Subject: Rescued Cat
From: Infomang@aol.com
We have rescued a black/white unneutered male cat near Wisconsin and
Van Ness. He looks like he has been on the road for
a while. He is very loving, all black with white on his face
and long whiskers. He has a very loud and demanding voice.
He
has been with us since about April 10. We are looking for his
original people or would be willing to adopt him out to a new
home.

TWO APPEALS TO FELLOW DOG OWNERS:
As the owner of a dog in the AU Park area, I would like to make a couple
of requests in order to help strengthen community
good will toward dogs and their owners.
(1) Please remember to always pick up after your dog wherever and whenever
he relieves himself. Not only is it the law, but it
is also your personal Responsibility. I am surprised by the frequency
with which I see waste on sidewalk boulevards, the
grassy area around the reservoir and community
gardens, and personal property. And please keep in mind that,
should your dog happen to relieve himself in a less visible spot
(for example, the ivy on my front slope), you are still obligated to
pick it up. I've had several unpleasant surprises while I've
been gardening this spring.
(2) Please obey the law by controlling your dog on a leash while walking
through our neighborhood streets. In addition to it
being a safety issue for dogs, drivers, kids, and other pedestrians,
it is not okay to allow your dog to exercise on and freely
explore my lawn, garden, and flowers. Please take
him to a park for his runs. Courtesy will go a long way toward keeping
everyone happy about our
four-footed pals. Thanks!
*** The other day I emerged from my house around noon to discover
a very large Raccoon sitting in my bird bath. He/She
looked at me for a few moments and then left, but not in a very great
hurry. -- KS

From: Alena Biagas <ABiagas@iona.org>
IONA Senior Services, a non-profit organization that provides support
and advocacy for area senior citizens, is seeking
volunteers to visit with homebound persons. We also need volunteers

appointments and support groups, or help provide staff
support in one of our two adult day programs. Orientation and
training is provided and the next session will be held on May

PEIRCE MILL
From: "Richard Abbott" <abbott1229@erols.com>
Community Day at Peirce Mill – Saturday, May 5
The Friends of Peirce Mill and the National Park Service are jointly
sponsoring a Spring event at Peirce Mill. "Community Day
at Peirce Mill" is for everybody, but especially our neighbors living
in upper Northwest D.C. Whether you’ve visited the mill in
the past when the waterwheel and gears
were turning, or would like to get acquainted with this fascinating
structure dating back to the 19th century, come down to the
mill at Tilden St. and Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park on the afternoon
of Saturday, May 5. The program runs from noon to
4:00 PM and will include activities for
children, mill tours, films, a talk on the planned fish passage around
the nearby dam on Rock Creek, and musical entertainment.
A special feature will be a description by engineers of the work now
underway to repair the floors of the mill. Come and learn
more about how the Friends and the National Park Service are beginning
the preservation and rehabilitation of this historic mill.
For further information, contact Richard Abbott at 202-244-2379.
COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
*** From: Robert Lehmann <longwood2@erols.com>
I live at 5208 41st St. and am looking for a garage to store a car
near where I live. I will pay rent. Call 202-362-3964.

We are getting ready to have a baby (due July 2nd) and would love to
have part-time help for about 3 hours a day (mornings
and/or afternoons) during the end of June, July and August. We
need help with light housekeeping, babysitting for the older
boy (18 mos.), maybe some cooking, and a bit of
help with the newborn. For college students, we'd be happy to
barter work in exchange for a room in our basement during that
time. For otherwise employed nannies, this arrangement might
work well if your employer is taking a month or so away for the
summer. A mature high school girl who lives in the neighborhood
(close to St. Columba's) would also be welcome. If you
know somebody who would be interested, please email.
