PRONOUNCING LOUGHBORO
**** From: Bkravetz@aol.com
In reply to Lorie Levey re pronunciation of "Loughborough"  --- it is
LOFF-boro!

**** From:  "James H. Johnston" <jimjohn@erols.com>
Nathan Loughborough, who moved to Washington in 1800 when the government
came here from Philadelphia, decided to spell his name Luffborough
allegedly because his mail wasn't being delivered. The story doesn't
make sense but it is evidence of how he pronounced the name.  The family
was prominent and newspapers and official records of the time spell the
name Loughborough, Luffborough, and Lufborough.  I have talked to two of
Nathan's descendants and asked them how to pronounce the name.  One,
whose name is Loughborough, pronounces it Lawf-borough.  The other, who
does not share the surname, pronounces it Luf-borough. The District of
Columbia has shortened the name of the road to Loughboro, so I suppose
you can pronounce that however you want.
------
I sent Lorie Leavy a copy of the email that I sent you about how to
pronounce Loughborough.  She wrote back: Thanks for the interesting
historical perspective. I've since learned that the pronunciation of the
UK place name is "Luff-borough," so the alternative spellings of the
family name seem to confirm that "Luff"  is the way to go. Or at least
*a* way to go.

COMMUNITY ALERT
From: Anonymous
Last week I had a frightening thing happen to me that many of our
neighbors should be aware of.  At 1:00 am, I was awakened to what I
thought were gun shots IN my house and the smell of smoke. Upon the
arrival of the police -- approximately a 9 minute wait of which I was on
the phone with the 911 dispatcher the whole time, we discovered that
someone has shot three bottle rockets through the mail slot of my front
door.  One of the rockets ended up on the second floor burning the
floor. The police are convinced that this "prank" -- which I call far
from a harmless prank as it frightened us to death plus could have
easily started a fire -- was done by some local neighborhood teenagers
bored on a summer night. Coincidentally the matches used to light the
rockets were from ... Congressional Country Club. The match book and
used matches were left on the front porch.

I don't know if this was an isolated case, but I'm hoping that the
parents of our neighborhood teenagers are paying attention to their
activities at one in the morning.  I would appreciate you not using my
name or e-mail address with respect to this correspondence as I do not
want any more trouble with what appear to be my "neighbors".

NEW SUPERCANS
From:  andrew shotwell <andy_lynnshotwell@yahoo.com>
Can you comment on why new super cans where give out? Recently one side
of our street were given all new super cans from the city. Myself and
others have recently purchased cans (myself  just this past April). Will
we be charged? will the city pick-up the old super cans? what can we do
if we don't need a new can? Any light you can shed on this issue will be
greatly appreciated.

SEARS/HECHINGER SITE OPTIONS
From: Robert Spier <RSpier@npr.org>
Dear Kathy and Tad, Thanks, first of all, for passing on the information
about the old Hechinger' site. I don't know at what point the site's
owners should receive/will want feedback from residents on the four
options you list, but I (and my wife, too) agree with you very strongly:
the fourth option is by the best.  Not only that, I feel it would be
most in keeping with what the Tenley Metro area should continue to
become: a multi-purpose (i.e., mixed use) anchor for the entire
neighborhood.

plate/registration renewal for those who expired in May and subsequent
ticketing by DC cops.  I know there was a piece in the Post on this, but
can't seem to find it.  Looking for anyone who has successfully fought
this.

ANIMALS IN THE 'HOOD

**** From: Darnot@aol.com
For future reference (and i sent this to Fatima Garawai as well):
When a cat is missing, contact D.C. Animal Control (run by Wash Humane)
at 202/576-6664 and report cat missing.  Someone there will check the
log they keep of "found cats" to see if anyone called in a found report
on the cat (e.g. Gibson).

Animal control officers tell us of housecats being used to train
fighting dogs or sold to labs (a "buncher" was once seen taking
neighborhood cats in Chevy Chase).  A couple of years ago cats were
disappearing from the American Univ. Park area in Northwest D.C. (it
might have been a natural predator, e.g., fox or bird of prey) or
not....in other words, it is so important to keep an eye on outdoor
cats.

If your pet  is lost, see Sherlock Bones (http://sherlockbones.com;
1-800-942-6637) which is highly effective in reuniting pets with owners.
-----
Another cat missing in au park!!!  This is getting scary! posted on all
the signs near my house on 47th street and davenport...
APB for "Figure" mostly white cat with grey tabby patches on back and
head. Missing from AU Park please call 202 237 1958.

Please include this call for loving homes...free kittens.
Subject:  FW: Urgent Need for Help
I'm sorry to do this to everyone, but it's heartbreaking to hear so many
kittens may be put to sleep. Please forward to anyone that might be
interested!!
Cheryle, our president just got off the phone with the Fairfax County
Shelter, and they are about to have a major situation on their hands.
They have just received 20 Siamese kittens and expect to receive 95-125
adult Siamese cats within the next few days. The shelter cannot hold
that many extra cats. We were hoping that there might be a way to advise
people about this and get the word out so to speak.. folks who might
want a Siamese cat or would be able to help.  If we don't act quickly
dozens and dozens will be put to sleep.  The lady who we work with at
the shelter is Ray (don't know the last name) and her phone number is
703-3240203 if anyone is interested in adopting animals.

**** HOW MANY DOGS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB?

Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our
whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid
burned out bulb?

Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up
to code.

Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler: Make me.

Lab: Oh, me, me!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can
I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I?

Malamute: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy.

Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the
walls and furniture.

Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By
the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

Cocker Spaniel Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

Doberman Pinscher: While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch.

Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the
dark......

Mastiff: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.

Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

Irish Wolfhound: Can somebody else do it? I've got this hangover.....

Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there....

Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?

Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little
circle....

Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light
bulb?

Hound Dog: ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz

Cat: Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So the
question is: how long will it be before I can expect light???
