CHIEF ROY GORDON REPLIES RE: SEXUAL ASSAULT QUESTION
From: Chief of Police <RG@his.com> (Roy Gordon, Chevy Chase Village
Police)
I checked with Montgomery County Police, 2nd District Bethesda
detectives and with MPD SOCC who know just about everything that goes
on
and no one recalls any sexual assaults in the area of 48th & Western
in
the last two weeks. If you get any addtional info like a date
and
approximate time I will look into it further.
Regards,
Roy Gordon, CCVPD
CORRECTION OF MY ROUNDTABLE STORY
My apologies for my misunderstanding and a misleading story -- KS
From: artistcjl@juno.com (Carolyn Lawrence)
Where we are on this is that we are in the middle of a formal protest
of
the Round Table's liquor license renewal. We have had two sessions
before the ABC Board and will have our third on October 3rd.
Their
license will not be renewed until the ABC Board rules on this, which
will be after they have heard all of our testimony (the Round Table
representatives as well as the neighbors who oppose).
We protested the license renewal on the 18 of July 2000, so you can
see
that it is a long drawn out battle. Each time we go before the
board we
incur legal fees, which is why we are holding the yard/bake sale fund
raiser October 13, 14. Anyone who wants to donate either stuff
or funds
to this effort can call me, Carolyn Lawrence at 202-362-6643.
MORE ON WORM/VIRUS
QUESTION:
Steve, if you just visit the Hechinger web site but don't download
the
.EMF file -- is that safe?
ANSWER:
****From: "Stephen Posniak" <sposniak@earthlink.net>
According to the Symantec analysis on Nimda, that is correct. This
is
what I included in an alert which I sent out to my organization:
"The
Nimda worm also spreads to computer users visiting Web sites which
are
already infected. Users visiting compromised Web servers will
be
prompted to download a .EML (Outlook Express) email file, which contains
the Nimda worm as an attachment." Solution: Don't download any .EML
files from Web sites (at least for now.)

Note that the virus was not in your e-mail. It was on a website
that
was a link shown in your e-mail. I talked to a neighbor tonight
who
reads your bulletins but doesn't go to the links. She had no
trouble.
Since my virus protection program, which I had updated just an hour
or
two before going online, caught the virus and eliminated the harmful
file, I never saw the consequences. I do know that the computer
people
who service my office have spent day and night all week trying to fix
damage from this virus.
NOTE: If anyone deleted the entire newsletter before reading it,
I will
be happy to send you a sanitized version, with the problematic web

omitted. Just let me know. -- KS

I've been informed by others that a new virus is afloat, namely, "A
VIRTUAL CARD FOR YOU". However, I cannot guarantee that this
new
warning is not a hoax, as chain letter warnings sometimes are.
HEROES ADDRESSES OK
From: Abauer4600@aol.com (Amy Bauer)
I just spoke with Cherrie Wanner-Doggett, the President of Heroes,
Inc.
to clarify the address difference. The address that the Firefighter's
Union Local 36 gave me the other day and you published in the last
newsletter is a good address. The funds will end up in the same
place.
I wanted to reassure everyone who already sent money to the PO Box
previously listed that the money will indeed end up at Heroes.
LAST HEARD ABOUT THE TOWER
A reader asked what was happening with the tower. This is the last
I
heard. Is there anything newer than this? -- KS
From: CooperJM@aol.com (Jo Cooper)
August 15, 2001
Excerpts from a Washington Post story, August 13, 2001, by Bill Miller:
More than 10 months after the D.C. government suddenly halted
construction on a 756-foot telecommunications tower in Northwest
Washington, the company behind the project is attempting to revive
a
lawsuit against the city.
Attorneys for American Towers Inc. said they hope to get the D.C.
government's decision overruled, resume construction and collect huge
damages.
"This isn't going to go away," said attorney John J. Brennan III.
The
company will ask the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of
Columbia
Circuit to reinstate the case as a federal matter.
Jo Cooper, a coalition leader, said, "We'll stay on the case until the
tower comes down."
THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN
From: "Maren Handler Siegel" <marenhs@hotmail.com>
I wanted to ask your readers if they have any suggestions on how to
deal
with a rowdy rental house. About 4 AU boys moved in over the
summer at
4227 Yuma street, and over the past month they have had 2 ruckus
parties. Many children and families were kept awake all night
by the
noise and traffic, there were people milling around till the early
AM,
guests were urinating, spitting and throwing up on other people's
property, and the list goes on. The police were called, the landlord
was
notified, and the residents severely chastised. What can we do
to
prevent this in the future? Any ideas? Please let me know your thoughts.
