**** From:"Donna Gregory" <donnagregory77@hotmail.com>
On Friday September 28th there was a break-in to a residence in the 4400
block of Warren Street.  The perpetrator broke the FRONT door open and
took a laptop. We think this happened between 8:45 and 10:30 am.  We are
amazed that this could happen on our block  AT ALL since we have several
work at home families here all day.  No one saw or heard anything.
Police said the person broke the wooden door open with his shoulder. FYI
to our neighbors.

**** Be wary of scams relating to Sept 11. Phone calls and e-mail
requests are being used by cons to solicit funds in the name of the
tragedy. The best way to guard against this is to give to a charity you
know and/or one to which you initiate the contact.  If you are contacted
and suspect it's a fraud, e-mail your information to the Federal Trade
Commission at www.consumer.gov/sentinel.

PARKING FOR BUSINESS OWNERS
From: Stephanie Yoffee <artwares@usa.net>
Has there ever been any suggestion of allowing business owners in the
neighborhood to be eligible for one zone parking permit? Or maybe a
special permit for business owners? I think it would make a big
difference for small business owners to have the permission to park on
neighborhood streets near their business location, given the fact that
there is no option for monthly parking/garage in the area around
Ellicott and Fessenden.

RE: NEW TRASH CANS
From: MGBPA@aol.com (Margaret Beveridge)
Is there any update on the issuance of new trash cans in our
neighborhood?  Anyone we can call to hasten delivery?

****  From: "Robert Hyman" <roberthyman@erols.com>
Subject: CITY SUPERCAN CONTRACT
This is an example of how the city gets taken by a hired contractor. The
new city wide "Supercan" (trash cans) delivery had been running behind
schedule and many of the old broken ones had failed to be taken away
even when the new ones were delivered. When I called to complain, they
told me to make a list of those locations that still had the old broken
ones that needed to be hauled away. I wanted the contractor to come back
finish delivering the new one's and take away the old broken ones as
required by the contract with the city. (By the way this is a two year
contract to fix and maintain them) Seeing that nothing soon would be
done, a group of irate citizens here in Glover Park hauled their own
broken trash cans to the rear of 2110 37th St. N.W. 56 trash cans were
collected with the help of many citizens frustrated with the cities
contractor inability to do the job. By choosing the rear of 2110 37th
St., an abandoned property and neighborhood eyesore, the citizens tried
to bring attention to their plight in trying to deal with this nuisance
house over the past three years.  We hope that our consolidation will
facilitate their removal.
Robert Hyman, President,  Glover Park Citizens Association

**** Some households need more than one can. You may need to "hide" the
old can on the day they deliver the new can, if you are one of these
households.  Or talk to DPW about how to keep the old can as well as the
new one -- Kathy Smith

COMMENTS ABOUT STARPOWER

****From: Requested to be anonymous.
I switched from DC cable with high hopes to Starpower and was initially
quite pleased. Recently, though, the quality of their signal has sunk to
virtually what I had had with DC Cable, and their customer service is
really no better. I've had it, again. Getting a dish. But, I promise to
install it so none of my neighbors have to look at it.

****I have Starpower cable modem and cable TV. I use Netscape, which is
free, as my e-mail provider. I started out with Outlook Express and
hated it. Then I learned that Starpower also provided Netscape. It was a
world of difference. I also have Zone Alarm (also free) as my firewall.
If you have a cable modem, you should have a fire wall or some
protection against viruses. I also have the Norton AntiVirus system. You
get different opinions, depending on who you talk to at Starpower.
Overall, I love the speed of cable modem; Starpower is pretty good to
work with for the most part. The cable is good but I miss Channel 8 -
the news channel which is not on the basic Starpower package. However,
I've learned to live without it. I don't regret getting Starpower cable
modem and TV.  Kathy Smith

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

****From: "Kathleen McLynn" <kdmclynn@starpower.net>
Does anyone know of a taxi service for children which is reliable?
There used to be a company called Kid Taxi which used a minivan and
picked up kids at private schools in the McLean area and then took them
to ballet, their tutor, or home.  Kid Taxi isn't in the directory.  My
query would be for the Bethesda/Chevy Chase/Friendship Hts/Tenley area.
Safety is a concern, of course.

****From: Mary McComb <maryemc@yahoo.com>
I have another roofer recommendation -- just had mine done by Tomlinson
Company whose office is in Bethesda, but Tracy Tomlinson is our neighbor
and he was very helpful.  They do slate roofing as well as fiberglass
(decided I couldn't afford slate, but nice to know they can do it).
Their phone number is 301-913-9111.

RE: CURRENT COMPUTER VIRUSES
From: "Stephen Posniak" <sposniak@earthlink.net>
Subject: "Vote" Malware
As of 10/1 6:30pm, there are three variants; Symantec rates them all as
having a threat level of 2 on a scale of 1- 5 with 5 being real bad.
Computers which are vulnerable use Microsoft Outlook and have Visual
Basic enabled.  The best defense is still to keep your anti-virus
software definition files up to date.  Also, if you get something, even
from someone you know which seems strange and doesn't pass the "smell
test," delete it from your mailbox and trash.  (If you want to be nice,
you could call the person up if you know her/him and ask whether they
have sent you any messages.  These are the Symantec AV Research Center
URLs for detailed descriptions of the three variants.  I noticed that
Starpower or Earthlink seems to be doing something to mangle my URLs.
The text should be correct but may have to be re-entered into your
browser's location window.  Or, just go to  <http://www.sarc.com> and
click on the the three descriptions, which will be about half way down
the page:
