I am told that within the last couple of days three houses on my block
(4200 of 37th) have had items stolen off  their front porch.
Interestingly, all were baby items, I'm told. Just FYI. Interesting
crime wave.

I thought I'd give the neighborhood a heads up.  We had a 3x4' flag
stolen from the front of our house. We are uncertain of the time but it
was either on Oct 16th or 17th.  We intend to replace it. To make it
more difficult to steal, I intend to drill a small hole and put a screw
into the base of the flag and secure it to the flag holder.

**** From: Neighbor who asked not to give name.
I wanted to report a very serious incident that happened on September 25
in the alley that runs parallel to 41st street and to Wisconsin avenue,
and which connects Davenport and Ellicott streets.  My husband and I
live on 41st street between Davenport and Ellicott, and our garage and
backyard face that alley.  The backs of several businesses that face
Wisconsin Avenue  also open onto this alley, and there is a plumbing and
heating business that seems to be based in the alley. The PN Hoffman
building garage exit faces the alley on the Davenport street side, and
the Round Table is on the corner of the alley on the Ellicott street
side.

Around 7:00 am on September 25, my husband was taking the trash out to
our green Supercan, which had rolled across that alley during the storm
on September 24.  He was rolling the Supercan back to our side of the
alley, and he noticed a pickup truck at the top of the alley (Davenport
Street entrance). The pickup truck sped down the alley, hitting the
trashcan he was holding, and knocked him out cold. The truck sped away,
and my husband suffered from a major concussion.  He had to be rushed to
the emergency room, was hospitalized for a night, and has had to miss 3
weeks of work. There is no chance that the pickup truck's driver didn't
see him, since it was light outside and since my husband had been
rolling the trash can across the alley, in full view of the truck.  The
driver had to be well aware that he hit both a person and a trash can,
as the can was banged up and lying on its side when I went out back to
take a look.  My husband is still home recovering, and has had severe
headaches, as well as some memory loss.  He will recover fully, but has
suffered both from the shock of the accident as well as from the time at
work he's lost.

Although we have a police detective investigating the case, we have very
little evidence, no eye-witnesses that we are aware of, and my husband
is not able to remember any details about the incident beyond what I've
stated above, which is common when a head injury occurs. We are both
enraged that this happened right behind our house and that whomever hit
him just left the scene. The detective suspects that the driver had to
be either a resident of the neighborhood, or someone who is very
familiar with the neighborhood, since that alley is not an obvious
through-way.

I hope that the readers of  this newsletter will come forward if they
think they witnessed anything that morning, or if they have any more
information that might help us.  I also want to warn our neighbors that
they should be exceedingly careful in that alley, and that they should
know about this since many of our neighbors have small children and pets
who might be in danger.

Please ask them to give any information they might have to: Detective
Dwayne Partman (2nd District Detective) at 202-282-0043. He asked that
you contact him directly rather than giving the information to me.

I have noticed that cars frequently speed down 41st Street and down Belt
road -- is there anything we can do to put down speed bumps or
additional stop signs to prevent this? We would also like to get a few
speed bumps and more signs in that alley -- it is incredibly dangerous,
frustrating, and downright scary to know that you can be injured so
severely just by taking out the trash or walking the dog.

I would appreciate any help our neighbors could give on that front as
well. Sincere thanks.

MISSING CATS
From: "Calvert, Christine" <CCalvert@steptoe.com>
Please spread the word!
The cat is "Cheny," a young, neutered male blue point Siamese, very
frightened, never been out on his own.  We think it's possible that he
might take up with one of the feral colonies in his neighborhood, since
he's used to being around so many other cats. He is tattooed on his
tummy with the Siamese Rescue telephone number.

The neighborhood is the 1400 block of  44th Street, N.W. in DC, near the
Foxhall intersection, and has woods that back up to Georgetown U. I am
listed as the local contact person and, if found,  he should be returned
to Siamese Rescue.

MORE ON SUPERCANS

**** From: Tom Hebert <thebert@capitolink.com>
Update on our supercans -- as per my earlier email on this, we had
called the city on September 7 to say that all the cans in our alley
(Fessenden/Faraday, between 44th and 45th) needed the old cans removed.
The city agreed it and said it should be a few days for the "contractor"
to get to it.  The contractor came this week, but they picked up just
our old supercan.  The dozens of others in the alley were not removed.
We will talk with our neighbors to see if they want to put in a
collective request to have all the other cans removed.

**** From: "Robert Hyman" <roberthyman@erols.com>
SUPERCANS AND MORE SUPERCANS.....Anyone who wants to get rid of a
supercan should...Keep the new one and write down the serial number,
your new can comes with a repair warranty! Take the unwanted one and
place it upside down with a note attached asking your regular trash
collectors to take it away, (provided they have room) Remember to put
your address on your new supercan and store it OUT of the alleys and on
private property until collection day. You may also call DPW at 645-4301
or the Mayors call center at 727-1000 with any other concerns.

**** From: "Lawrence M. Miller" <lawrence.miller@starpower.net>
On our block of Verplanck Place every house received a new supercan,
left on the front
lawn.  Some people had needed a new can for years.  Others of us had no
need at all for
a new can.  What a waste!

I have used Winston's Chimney Service in the past. In the Dupont Circle
area they regularly get the nod from homeowners in the know. I'd
recommend them without reservation. I know nothing of chimney business
but wouldn't be surprised if it takes a while to get on their schedule
at this time of year. Winston's Chimney Service, 4212R Howard Avenue,
Kensington, MD, 301-571-8546.

I saw the person wanting shutters stripped. Anyone out there who has
shutters, in the garage maybe, who doesn't want them? Please contact me.

I'm selling a Large Dog Pet Door. It  fits into a sliding glass door.
It is 17.5 inches wide and its height adjusts from 78.5" to 81".   It
has a security locking device  on the flap through which the dog goes.
I paid $180.00 for it in  April, it has been used very little and is in
like-new condition.

I'm accepting a best offer.  Carolyn Lawrence at artistcjl@juno.com,  or

And Kathy--the fund raiser Yard and Bake Sale (for legal fees the
Ellicott Street neighbors incurred in their efforts to restore  peace,
order and quiet in the neighborhood),  went very well.  We  raised
$4,800 in two days--two long and intensive days, preceded by  weeks of
preparation.  Many thanks to you for giving us space in  the newsletter,
and many thanks to those who donated goods and came  to buy.  This was
truly a neighborhood effort and we needed every  bit of help that we got
for the success that we had. Thanks again.  Carolyn Lawrence
