**** Remember that street robberies and thefts from autos tend
to go up
around Christmas. Crooks know that people have shopping money with
them.
Don't leave any packages visible in the car. If somebody stops
suddenly
in front of you on an escalator or at a door or whatever, remember
that
there may be someone right behind you waiting to pick your pocket or
purse. They often work in teams. Also be careful with your wallet and
purse while your purchase is being rung up. Don't set either aside
while
you sign the receipt.

LOST SOME KEYS?
From: "Catherine Brown" <catherine.w.brown@worldnet.att.net>
Someone found a key ring with two keys, one for a car and one
probably
for a house, on a medallion and dropped it in my front doorway
mistakenly assuming they were mine 11/30 or 12/1. Anyone who
owns them
can call 244-9228. Please mention your car type and describe
the
medallion when you call.
BEWARE OF CHIMNEY CLEANING SCAM
From: "Mary Gillilan" <marygillilan@hotmail.com>
My husband and I had Town & Country Chimney come to clean our chimney.
After the cleaning
they informed us that our chimney desperately and urgently needed to
be
relined. If we did not get this done immediately, we were in
danger of
fires and even collapse. The cost would be about $4,000.
Subsequently,
we hired Winston's Chimney for a second opinion. There is nothing
wrong
with our chimney. Winston's told us that this is a common ploy,
as
people are not familiar with their chimneys and have no way of knowing
if they really need the work done. I just wanted to inform everyone
and
tell them to be careful of this scam.
CHIEF RAMSEY PLANNING TO TRIPLE SIZE OF POLICE RESERVE CORPS
There are currently 100 reserve officers and Chief Ramsey wants to
increase the number to 300. These are the people who volunteer to work
in uniform along with full time police officers (not the non-uniformed
who are called Auxiliaries -- like me). If you think you might
be
interested in becoming a Reserve Officer, information is available
on
the MPD web site at www.mpdc.dc.gov, through the MPD's recruiting
unit
on 727-2767 and the MPD Reserve Corps office on 727-4208. Inspector
Jeffrey Moore is in charge of this activity.
A COMMENT ON MISSING NEWSLETTERS TO AOL SUBSCRIBERS
**** From: Anji Henderson <vual7@yahoo.com>
You hit the nail on the head... AOL does filter certain things... Most
especially things that are sent to large audiences, such as 900
addresses... Nothing you can do and nothing AOL _will_ do ... And this
is yet another reason why I was extra especially happy to get rid of
AOHell...
**** If you're on AOL, you might want to talk to them or periodically
check the ANC3F website to see if you missed any COMMUNIT-E issues.

1. I have a GREAT carpet cleaner. Banner Carpet
301-353-1217. It is
owned
and operated by Bruce Johnson who is a Captain at our local firehouse.
He has
cleaned many carpets for me in the last few years and has always
revitalized them
far beyond what any other cleaner has ever done in the past.
(Does a
great job on
Orientals too.)
2. Just an additional note to the lady who asked that
people please
pick up dog poop. I have noticed that while people often pick
up the
poop in plastic bags, they don't always want to take them home to
discard them. I have watched plastic bags being shoved down the
storm
drains and we all know where that will end up. But also, on many,
many
occasions my neighbors and I have had the plastic bags discarded in
our
super cans in the alley. While that may be convenient for the
dog
owners, it is extremely unpleasant for us, especially in the summer
when
the stink is overwhelming and the flies are incessant. Often
times the
poop bag is broken open when additional trash is thrown in, then for
the
rest of the week it becomes unbearable. Please be sure to take
your
poop home with you.

REDEVELOPMENT AT MILITARY AND WESTERN
From: "Hazel F. Rebold" <hfrebold@earthlink.net>
I hope everyone is aware of the proposed redevelopment at Military
and
Western. This is the site now occupied by the Washington Clinic and
its
parking lot, and also includes land from the Lisner Home. Stonebridge
Associates (partners of Chevy Chase Land Co.) are proposing 225
apartment units, plus retail space, which would occupy a building of
265,000 gross square feet, on a site of 58,840 square feet. That means
an FAR (floor area/land area ratio) of 4.5, which is 2.5 times more
massive than current zoning allows, 1.8 FAR. It would be 90 feet
tall,
1.8 times higher than the 50' now allowed, and would be the height
of
the Pavilion/Embassy Suites. My front yard starts 71 feet from the
property line for this site.
In addition to being an enormous intrusion into a residential
neighborhood, our traffic, accident, and parking problems are already
at
unacceptable levels, and are guaranteed to get much worse with the
vast
projects coming on the Maryland side of the Military/Wisconsin/Western
intersection.
Rather than 10 stories of apartments, townhouses along the Military
Rd.
frontage are clearly the appropriate and compatible transition to our
single family and townhouse neighborhood. This idea had very strong
support among a group of neighbors who met earlier this week to discuss
the site. And of course, townhouses have extremely low traffic and
parking impact. A taller building on the Western Ave. frontage would
then be reasonably removed from our residential neighborhood, and could
use Western Ave. for all exit and entrance traffic.
The Comprehensive Plan for Ward 3 (the Chapter 14 link at
http://planning.dc.gov/documents/main.shtm>) describes the "Major Themes
for Ward 3." They start with "Protecting the Ward's residential
neighborhoods," and "Controlling redevelopment," 1400.2(a) and (b).
I
hope many readers will lend support for these goals, and will take
part
in the next several ANC meetings, respond in this forum, write to the
local "Current" newspaper, and ultimately show up at the hearing before
the zoning board.
Also, this proposed development involves not only the entire Washington
Clinic site, but also at least 15,000 square feet of land from the
Lisner Home. Several of us long-time residents thought that Lisner
has
covenants that would forbid such a sale, and of course we wonder what
may happen to the remaining Lisner site. Perhaps there is a lawyer
out
there who can shed some light on this?
