TENLEYTOWN FIREHOUSE AGREEMENT SIGNED
From: Councilmember Kathy Patterson (Ward 3)
KPATTERSON@dccouncil.washington.dc.us

(The following is an excerpt from Councilmember Kathy Patterson's latest
Ward 3 Newsletter, which I will forward in its entirety later. Many,
many thanks to her for bringing the parties together --  KS.)

Renovation and a new addition to the Tenleytown firehouse (Engine 20)
on  Wisconsin Avenue is finally moving ahead after the signing of an
agreement by the Fire and Emergency Medical Department, the Office of
Property Management, the Office of Planning and the Historic
Preservation Office. When the agreement appeared to be in jeopardy, I
introduced emergency legislation to exempt the Tenleytown firehouse from
historic preservation requirements.  That maneuver was successful and I
withdrew that legislation on Tuesday when all of the involved parties
signed the agreement.  The effort included my chief of staff personally
delivering the document for signing by Executive Branch officials!

I am delighted that this agreement has finally been signed. The
renovation of Engine 20 Company's firehouse in Tenleytown, as well as a
new addition, are much needed improvements for the public safety of the
community and for the fire department personnel who work there.  Many
people in the community, the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical
Services, the Historic Preservation Office, the Office of Corporation
Council and the Office of  Property Management have worked hard to make
this agreement happen. I hope we can now move forward as quickly as
possible to break ground. It is my understanding that demolition may
begin as early as two weeks from now.

TORNADO VICTIM
From: Abauer4600@aol.com (Amy Bauer)
I just had a thought and perhaps you can help me.  Dennis's sister and
her family lost absolutely everything in the LaPlata tornado.  She and 7
members of her family were inside the house when the tornado struck and
all of them made it out with non-life threatening injuries.  Only broken
bones and lacerations were suffered (one which took 49 stitches to
close) but they are all alive.  We have been picking through the debris
and have salvaged clothes and a few other small items like videos and
some books but everything else is gone; not one stick of furniture was
found in useable condition; understandable since the entire house and
one wall of the foundation landed in the backyard and beyond.  I was
hoping to ask the neighborhood if anyone may have some furniture that
they may be able to donate.  Items such as dressers, tables, chairs, and
lamps and anything else in fairly good condition would be most
appreciated.  There are twin infants that survived (one was blown from
the second story and landed in a pool while still in his mother's arms)
and two young children 12 and 14.  The only thing they will not need is
beds and they are pretty well set with clothes.  If anyone is able to
help out, please call me and I will coordinate a way to deliver these
things to LaPlata.
Thanks,
Amy L. Bauer
