HEADS UP ON A FEW OTHER SCAMS

**** From: <JTopa62045@aol.com>(Joan Topalian)
I wanted to let people on 44th St. NW (between Fessenden St. and River
Rd.) know about a young woman posing as a Russian.  She rang our
doorbell Monday (Jan. 27)  around 6:30 PM.  She was very fair and had
blonde hair. She seemed  well dressed and spoke with NO accent.  I'd say
she was in her late 20s. She wanted access to our house, which I
denied.  Did anyone else open their door that night?

**** From: "David M. Winn" <dmwinn@starpower.net>
FIREWOOD -- Note that there are several scam artists selling firewood
door- to-door,
offering "a cord of firewood for $125."  A cord of wood is 4' X 4' X 8',
stacked in parallel.  What these guys in fact unload from their truck is
a much smaller amount of pine wood (i.e., not fireplace hardwood),
stacked criss-cross to take up space. That said, does anyone know an
honest firewood dealer?

**** From: "Joanne Capper" <jocapper@worldnet.att.net>
About 2 years ago I experienced a scam similar to the one described by
Kim Peoples, although this young white, well-dressed woman approached me
downtown saying she worked for an investment firm and had gone out for
drinks after work with some of her colleagues (all males) and that they
got drunk and she wanted to leave and go home but needed the taxi fare.
I gave her a $20 - no change - with my business card so she could return
the money  the next day.  I never heard from her.

RESIDENTIAL PARKING ISSUE
From:  "Peter Butturini" <pgb@tidalwave.net>
According the District of Columbia, you must be a resident of the
District to obtain resident parking sticker.  There are exceptions for
military and congressional personnel.  There are temporary parking
stickers for out of town visitors but you must present some kind of
proof that these are valid out of town visitors and even then the
temporary visitor parking permit is valid only weeks (available through
your local police department).

I've heard (but not been able to verify)that there are temporary parking
permits for contractors or for nursing personnel (elder care).

As of today and for the painful, forseeable future, despite repeated
emails and phone calls to Kathy Patterson and Mayor Williams office,
there is no provision for parking permits for nannies or others who
legitimately work in the area. We've even tried negotiating with the
local DC parking supervisor and the individual parking enforcement
officers, to no avail. The end result is that we continue to be ticketed
almost daily and weekly with no recourse.  (Here I begin to lose it a
little) This is extortion, outrageous and harassment. The city council
and the mayor simply don't care.  That said: this is a city that chases
the latest bright shiny object, and not enough to what really matters:
constituent services -- for all its residents.

A POSITIVE NOTE RE THE DMV:
From: "Deborah Kennedy Coster" <kennedycoster@netacc.net>
I recently had to go to the DMV to obtain a DC title and registration
for my New Hampshire-registered auto. Couldn't use the Georgetown Park
office because it isn't full service, so I went to the one at the
Penn-Branch Shopping Center. I recommend this office to anyone who needs
to visit the DMV. Here are my reasons:
1. It's easy to get to: Just go down Rock Creek Parkway to the SE-SW
(Eisenhower) Freeway, along the freeway to the Pennsylvania Ave bridge,
over to the intersection of Penna and Branch Aves, and you're there. The
drive takes about 25 minutes.
2. It has free parking.
3. It has a relatively pleasant atmosphere, for a municipal office --
windows, smallish size (compared to Judiciary Square), no mob of people.
4. On the hill on Pennsylvania Ave coming back, you get a great view of
the US Capitol.
5. It's fairly close to the inspection station on Half Street, so if
you're engaged in a process that involves inspection as well as DMV
visit (as I was), you can do one on the way to the other.
6. Best reason of all - It has friendly, helpful, competent employees.
My wait was a little over half an hour (early afternoon on a Tuesday).
The man who processed my paperwork was knowledgeable and a pleasure to
talk with.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

"Girl Scouts in AU Park area - does anyone know of a local troop in the
area for our daughter? Thanks.

**** From:  <AndrewsSachs@aol.com>
Someone requested information on a driving instructor for their
teenager.  I highly recommend "Officer Wilson", a retired policeman who
teaches teens to drive.  (His son also teaches this.)  He was incredibly
good with our son.  He even goes with his students when they take their
test.  Everyone at the test site knows him - and they also know that if
he taught this kid, this kid knows how to drive!  His # is
202-438-9059.  His son's # is 202438-9038 - Glenn Wilson. Maryetta

I have found the guys (particularly Steve, who is now the manager) at

And, very convenient!  Can't ask for more!

Shelter/Design Magazines Back Issues
I have an embarrassing quantity of back issues of Metropolis and
Metropolitan Home magazines.  I recall a posting here a while back
seeking a home for someone else's similar collection before the grim
recycler takes over.  I'd love to see them be put to good use; any
ideas?  Free to a good home!

Hardwood floor refinishing --  Two years ago, I had all the floors in my
house refinished by Rick Noonan at 301-229-6338.  My realtor also gave
me Nash Floor at 301-891-0004 and Roy Meador & Sons at 703-836-1122.  I
picked Noonan because he could work me into his schedule.  I don't know
if they are all still in the business.

For floors I recommend John Cooper (703) 426-0356.  He has all the
professional equipment.  He usually needs 2 weeks lead time.  He did my
floors 10 years ago and you can take a look if you like!

TWO POSTINGS FOR HOMES FOR CATS
From: <Darnot@aol.com>
Maine Coon + Mate Need Loving Home
CONTACT: darnot@aol.com
"Kahuna" is a classic maine coon, brown & black tabby with tufts on his
paws.
"Hester" is a luscious black beauty. Both are exceedingly sweet
kitties--quiet dispositions, about four years old. Hester has
rediscovered her kittenhood (probably never actually had a kittenhood)
and loves to play with her feather toy--tirelessly. Kahuna cannot
believe how comfortable fleece beds are! They are happy not to be out in
the cold and to have regular  meals served on clean plates daily! They
are just the sweetest...not at all afraid of my big dog Cody. But my
other cats are very unhappy and it is not fair to keep them confined to
a small room. I want them to find someone to love them as much as I do
where they can have free range to roam and sleep on snuggly beds and
gaze out every window! They must be placed together as they  are
inseparable--sleep together, eat together are always near each other and
have been for their entire lives. Email darnot@aol.com for pix.

Siamese + declawed mate urgently need home
CONTACT: <drrichar@micron.com>(Doug Richardson)
Siamese is approx. 18 months old, weights about 7 pounds, has been
spayed, is very friendly, and is litter box trained. The black cat is
approx. 3 years old, weighs about 14 pounds, has been declawed, spayed,
is friendly but prefers to watch people from a distance until she gets
acquainted, and is also litter box trained. The cats get along well with
our (3) dogs but I do not have the time to spend taking care of 5
animals. I am keeping them until a home is found but do not want to wait
forever. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (pix attached)

REGARDING THE SEARS / HECHINGER BUILDING

**** From: <Browningcb@aol.com>(Cheryl Browning)
On January 29, there was a groundbreaking ceremony at the
Sears/Hechinger building.  This exciting event was attended by the Mayor
and Councilmembers Patterson, Brazil and Evans.  The Mayor stated that
Tenleytown residents should be proud of working towards appropriate
development in Tenleytown, while taking stands against inappropriate
development.  The Mayor's comments about this project being a successful
example of collaboration between the developer, residents and the city
was also echoed by the Councilmembers.  Armand Spikell, one of the
principals from Madison Marquette, also thanked Tenleytown Neighbors
Association for its support and mentioned the First Taste of Tenleytown
as one of the special projects held in the building.

The developers presented a check for $20,000 to the Janney PTA for use
in renovation work at the school.  The Mayor then donned a hard hat, got
inside a Hobie Cat and pulled down one of the interior wall panels.
Many thanks to Guapos and Starbucks for food and drink.  There were also
two cakes (one with a picture of the Sears building as it originally
looked, and one with a picture of  what it will look like when
completed).

In the last Communit-E, someone asked about the timetable for the
Hechinger building.  The developers said they are hoping to open the
retail stores this Fall, and the apartments would be built thereafter.

-----------

**** From: <Pavukmatt@aol.com> (Matt Pavuk)
I wanted to say a few words in response to some of the people who had
questions about the plans for the Sears/Hechingers Building.  I am a
director of Tenleytown Neighbors Association and have been to several of
the meetings held between the developers and the community.

     1)  The developers tried very hard to accommodate the desires of
the community to bring a hardware store into the site.  As many of you
know, they tried very hard to convince Home Depot to move into the site,
and that effort ultimately failed.  They have contacted other hardware
stores and have not been able to land anyone interested in the site.
There is still retail space available in the building, and the
developers still say that they are trying to find someone interested in
running a hardware store on the site.

      2)  The developers have gone for more than three years carrying a
$17 million debt before giving up on having a hardware store as the
primary occupant.  During that time, they have been very gracious to the
community, and have allowed the Salvation Army to use the space for its
yearly toy drive, Janney School to hold a book sale, Tenleytown
Neighbors Association to hold its Taste of Tenleytown event, and
provided space for the Art-O-Matic event several years ago.

      3)  Best Buy represents a form of retail which does not exist
anywhere else in the District.  The developers held community meetings
to ascertain the types of retail which interested residents.  There was
a significant demand expressed for the type of products carried by Best
Buy.

        4)  The developers believe that the retail stores will be
occupied in the fall of 2003.  The apartments will take about 1 to 1.5
years to complete.  There will be retail parking included as part of the
development.

         5)  The groundbreaking was held on January 29, and was attended
by Mayor Williams, and Councilmembers Patterson, Brazil and Evans, as
well as a lot of members of the community.  All of the politicians
lauded the way in which the developer, the community and the government
worked together in formulating the plans to develop this site.

While Best Buy was not my first choice, I am satisfied that the
developers diligently sought a hardware store, and only began
considering other alternatives when no hardware stores showed
interest.

---------

 From:  "Mary Mejac" <mmgram4445@starpower.net>
I believe that the choice of Best Buys will do nothing for the
neighborhood. A better choice would be a hardware store. The purchase of
a larger appliance occurs infrequently, the purchase of smaller items
occurs often.

GLOBALIZATION

From:  <edw3qc@att.net> (Ed McCauley)
From: "Raymond A.Reedy" <cojrail@kiski.net>

Question: What is the truest definition of Globalization?
Answer: Princess Diana's death.
Question: How come?
Answer: An English princess with an Egyptian boyfriend crashes in a
French tunnel, driving a German car with a Dutch engine, driven by a
Belgian who was drunk on Scottish whiskey, followed closely by Italian
Paparazzi, on Japanese motorcycles, treated by an American doctor, using
Brazilian medicines!

And this is sent to you by an American, using Bill Gates' technology and
you are probably reading this on one of the IBM clones that use
Taiwanese-made chips, and Korean-made monitors, assembled by Bangladeshi
workers in a Singapore plant, transported by lorries driven by Indians,
hijacked by Indonesians, unloaded by Sicilian longshoremen, trucked by
Mexican illegal aliens, and finally sold to you.

That, friends, is Globalization.
