CORRECTION TO ANC3E AGENDA
From: "Polly King" <pking@lldhhome.org>
I mistakenly put the wrong house number on item 6 of the ANC 3E Meeting
Notice I sent last week. It should have read: Discussion of and

AFTERNOON WALKERS
From: <Jah824@aol.com> (Judy Horowitz )
The "Afternoon Walkers" will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays at
4
p.m. at 4455 Springdale St. (near Turtle Park). There is ample
parking
on the street. Eight people have already shown interest and we
welcome
more. It is completely voluntary, so we need more participants
to
insure we have company along the way. The only obligation is
to enjoy
walking and good company. We plan to walk about 3 miles in an
hour, up
45th Street to River Road and back, probably on 43rd to Van Ness to
45th
and then finish at Springdale. Some may choose a shorter alternative
of
about 2 miles, back down 45th Street. These plans are of course
subject
to review. We look forward to growing in numbers so please spread
the
word to your neighbors!

DID ANYONE SEE ANYTHING?
From: Name Withheld
Please be aware of the following incident. My home in the 4800 block
of
41st Street was burglarized during the day, on Tuesday, January 28th.
The person (s) used my emptied recycling bin to scale the tall fence;
proceeded to take apart the wooden frame of the basement door (since
they could not breech the deadbolt lock or security glass); and broke
the lock on the door to the first floor. They took musical instruments
and sentimental jewelry. Other neighbors have mentioned that they
noticed their rear gates opened in the past two weeks. If you saw or
heard anything that may be related, please reply via the newsletter.
Thank you.
SEVERAL SCAMS
**** (a prelue to a robbery)
From: "Carolyn Long" <carolynlong@earthlink.net>
This happened to an elderly friend of mine who lives in upper
Georgetown: She and her neighbor were returning home from shopping
when
a white male driver with a black female passenger pulled over to the
curb and asked for directions to Chantilly. My friend was trying to
help
him, looking at some directions he had scrawled on a piece of paper,
when he reached out the window, grabbed her purse, and sped off. The
saddest thing about this is that, not only did my friend lose her money,
credit cards, and all her ID, she lost her faith in people, saying
"I
was just trying to be nice." So watch out for these rats. I always
carry
a purse with a long strap and wear it across my chest, not on my
shoulder--harder to rip off.
**** From: <edw3qc@att.net> (Ed McCauley)
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual
identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician who was
conducting a
test on telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should
touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up.
Luckily,
I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company,
I
was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual
full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long
distance calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed
that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons.
I
have also verified this information with UCB Telecom,Pacific
Bell, MCI,
Bell Atlantic and GTE. Please beware.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT RE: FIRE RESCUE
From: <Dennismcvey@aol.com> (Dennis McVey)
Please help us, your local firefighters, to help you!
There are a few things that each homeowner can do to help ensure that
we
get to you as soon as
possible.
1. Be sure that your home address is obvious from the street, using
contrasting numbers...Also, number the back of your house because unless
there is fire showing from the back - we cannot easily tell which house
is in need of assistance.
2. Do not park in the alley or close to the corners of the alley. I
cannot tell you how many times that we have been unable to get to the
back of an address because someone had parked in the alley. Fire
companies are dispatched to the front of a building as well as the
back
and each company has it's assigned duties.
3. Be sure to remove your trash cans from the alley. The firetrucks
are
much wider than your cars and need every bit of space. We have
had to
send a fireman ahead of the truck to move each trashcan. This
slows
response times.
4. Be sure to trim back all brush and tree branches to your yard line
or
as high as 12 feet. Our firetrucks are very tall!
5. Don't landscape around fire hydrants and be sure to shovel around
them so they can be seen in a heavy snow.
And as always...smoke detectors save lives...change those batteries!

TREES FOR TATE PARK

who asked for them. But the demand for scraps is so high that if anyone

Traffic Advisory : Because of structural deficiencies, the roadway
on
the 31st Street bridge over the C&O Canal in Georgetown has been
narrowed by installing concrete traffic barriers to prevent vehicles
from driving or parking near the curb. An engineering inspection showed
that the steel beams under the curb lanes have deteriorated.
With these
limits, the bridge is safe. The Department of Transportation is planning
to expedite the full replacement of the bridge.

LATEST ON TENLEYTOWN FIREHOUSE
From: <Abauer4600@aol.com>
A couple of weeks ago, I spent an hour or so talking with the foreman
of
the Tenleytown Firehouse project and he told me that they are about
6-7
months behind schedule. The original estimated time to finish
was 14
months which had put the anticipated end date in August 03. (The
firehouse was vacated in early June 02). He said that they now
anticipate January 04 as a finish date and that was being optimistic!
I was disappointed to see Chief Thompson testify during his confirmation
hearing that the project was on schedule and would be completed by
October 03. It seems that he has not been recently updated on
the
issue. The Chief stated, during his hearing, that the hold up
was due
to the historical issues of the project.
When asked if we would be getting one of the newly delivered engines
to
replace the old and leaky Engine 20 he said, yes. He said the
department had ordered a specially modified engine to fit in the small
doors of E-20. I cannot figure out why the department would spend
the
extra money to modify a standard piece of equipment when the new bays
will have enlarged doors..?..
He also stated that we will be given the new "freightliner" which will
be part light rescue and part advanced life support (no transport).
It
will be interesting to see how he intends to fit that piece of equipment
in the firehouse but at least he did state for the record that we will
be given back our original equipment including Truck 12. There
is also
a plan to locate a "hazmat" pod in Ward 3. It would be nice if
Engine
20 was built large enough to house this also.
In an interesting sidenote - Engine 22, which is located on Georgia
Avenue, just south of Missouri Avenue, has been scheduled to be rebuilt
on another site completely. Chief Thompson stated that to renovate
that
old building would cost much more than to build new.

HAVING A BAD DAY?

The average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the Exxon Valdez

frantically, almost in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running

wood,
