CRIME PATTERNS IN THE 'HOOD
**** From: "Dinsmore, Barbara" <DinsmoreB@doaks.org>
Our garage on Veazey Street has been broken into twice in the last
month
or so. First time was at night - just a broken window and no
entry.
Second time was between 1:30 and 5 PM. Perps stood on the supercan,
broke a window, sawed thru a hasp, broke one lock, destroyed another
doorknob/lock, got thru one bike chain and spent a lot of time trying
to
hack thru a kryptonite lock that locked two bikes together. They
ended
up getting nothing, but sure tried. They had been in and out two gates
into the yard and also into an unlocked outer basement door. Police
were
very responsive and indicated that lots of garages are being broken
into
these days and that they really want to catch these guys. Bikes seem
to
be a favorite target.

On Tuesday, February 11, 2003, investigators obtained information
indicating that Terry Lumsden was in a stolen van in the unit
block of
T Street, NW. Metropolitan Police officers working as part of the
Redeployment force in the area arrested him, without incident, at
approximately 11:58 pm. Lumsden is presently charged with five
robberies and one attempted robbery. He is expected to be arraigned
today.
In each robbery, the suspect(s) were driving a vehicle, when they
stopped and asked a woman for directions. When the woman approached
the
vehicle, the suspect(s) grabbed her purse and drove-off. The four
similar robberies occurred in the following locations, on the indicated
dates: 1600 block of 34th Street, NW, on January 20, 2003
600 block of 19th Street, NW, on January 30, 2003
3000 block of O Street, NW, on February 4, 2003
2700 block of Wisconsin Avenue, NW, on February 6, 2003
THE SKINNY ON THE AT&T SCAM

Re the supposed #90 AT&T scam -- This is an urban legend, sort

The warning from Mr. McCauley about a "9-0-#" telephone scam applies
only to a very small number of business phones that are run through
a
PBX and configured improperly. Pushing those keys on a residential
phone would not give the caller access to your telephone line.
To
verify this information, see
http://www.urbanlegends.com/ulz/90pound.html. I note that Mr.
McCauley's posting is identical to the sample hoax warning in the Urban
Legends write-up, including a statement that he called two telephone
companies that no longer exist and two based in California to check
out
the story . I wonder if he actually had this experience or perhaps,
trying to be helpful, simply forwarded a chain e-mail hoax.
[From Kathy Smith: I urge you to bookmark the two web sites mentioned
in these responses. That way, when you get an e-mail about a scam you
can check for yourself .]

Working with some seniors, I get more upset everyday when I hear more
of
them are getting ripped off. I've made it a policy if anything
is too
good to be true, there is something wrong with it. I always check
with
at least two people (preferably a reliable source) before responding
to
anything from a stranger asking me to do or offer anything.
QUESTION ABOUT TENLEY STUDY CENTER
From: <nancila@att.net>
Speaking of Garrison Street (accessary apt. referred to in the Feb.
11th newsletter), does anyone know why there are no parking
restrictions (permit only or time) on the stretch of curb in front
of
the Tenley Study Center opposition the Rodman's loading driveway
near
Wisconsin Avenue? It seems the Tenley Study Center has free access
because whatever time of the day I pass by, there is a row of
cars with
VA or MD plates lined up there. Once I saw a car there for days
with NO
plate. And, what is studied at the Tenley Center? Does
anyone know?
Thanks.
COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
**** From: "Dinsmore, Barbara" <DinsmoreB@doaks.org>
Looking for a driver to take a friend to dialysis appointments 3 times
a
week at 5:45 AM and pick her up at about 11 AM - from North Cleveland
Park to Georgetown, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Does anyone
have a
favorite taxi driver or know of a good driver, very pleasant (French
speaking would be great) person who would be interested in doing this
for an indefinite period of time? I would be grateful for any leads.
Many thanks.

FAIR PLAY

From: "Lori Benson" <L.Benson@verizon.net>
One morning I was called to pick up my son at the school nurse's office.
When I walked through the main entrance, I noticed a woman, curlers
in
her hair, wearing pajamas. "Why are you dressed like that?" I asked
her.
"I told my son," she explained, "that if he ever did anything to
embarrass me, I would embarrass him back. He was caught cutting school.
So now I've come to spend the day with him!"
