RECYCLING PROBLEM FROM BEFORE THE SNOWS
From: Janine Prader <jprader@bellatlantic.net>
Date:  Wed, 12 Feb 2003
Maybe it is just in my alley but the recycling team has only  picked up
the bin once in the past  four weeks. I even carried the load to Van
Ness  street to make it easier for them, because normally they just
throw the bin (it is broken already) around from 46 st alley  to Van
Ness. I tried to reach the government number  but it is always busy.
What is there to do?  Any advise?  I have 3 weeks  of recyclable sitting
in my pantry- help!

RE:  TENLEY STUDY CENTER
**** From: Osofsky, Debra <OsofskyD@alpa.org>
I can't address the parking restriction at the Tenley Study Center, but
I have asked that very same question (What is studied there?) of one of
the residents of the Center.  At least as of 4 years ago, male members
of a Catholic order (I believe they are brothers) lived there and
offered after-school tutoring to male area high school students (my
recollection is that the students being offered services were
underachievers and/or Catholic).  I'm not really familiar with the
Catholic orders, so I may have mistaken this, but it's my impression
that it's Opus Dei.

My son took a SAT prep class at the Tenley Study Center.

ANIMALS IN THE 'HOOD

**** From: <MargaritaCrocker@aol.com>
I live near 49th and Mass Ave., am self-employed and now have 2
delightful cats.  I however have to travel a bit this spring and am
looking for a way to have my cats tended while I am gone.  I am happy to
do a trade if there is anyone who is in a similar dilemma.  I tend to be
around for all the major holidays so I could watch your cats then or
when you travel.  Since I work out of my home I would be happy to visit
them more than once a day.  Alternatively, does anyone know of a good,
reliable cat sitter?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

**** From: <Infomang@aol.com>
We are looking for volunteers to help take care of the adoptable cats at
Petco in Cleveland Park.  If you are available during the day for an 1-2
hours, once a week and don't mind scrubbing cat cages, we need you.
Rewards are satisfaction when the cats get adopted out to good homes and
many purrs.

**** From:  "LINDA HUGHES" <lindahughes@mris.com>
Does  anyone know  why there are so many flocks of  robins here in the
middle of a very cold winter with the worms buried under many inches of
snow.  I worry  about them!

**** From: "Johanna Turner" <joturner@speakeasy.net>
I have a good friend across the district line who is looking for a good
home for two domestic short hair cats, 4 ½ y.o. sisters from the same
litter.  Small, gray with white markings.  Very friendly and
affectionate, love to sit on laps; neutered and all shots up to date.
Regrettably have to give them up due to move.  A good home is so much
better than the shelter.  Call Cay Hartley 301-229-0806 or
gville27@aol.com.

bells chime 4 pm and walking up 45th Street to River Road, looping back
usually on 43rd Street.  We walk for up to an hour.  Come join us!

FROM DPW: NEW PARKING FINES GO INTO EFFECT MARCH 1, 2003
From:  <anc3b@aol.com>
Contact: Mary Myers, DPW   (202) 671-2375
Increases Affect 5 Most Common Infractions; One Commercial Violation.
The District will raise fines for six parking violations, effective
Saturday, March 1.  Fines have remained constant for the last decade,
falling behind those of neighboring jurisdictions and losing much of
their deterrent effect.

The fines for four parking violations will increase from $20 to $30:  No
Parking Anytime; No Parking/Public Alley; Disobeying Official Sign
(street cleaning, etc.), and Parking Beyond Posted Limit in a
residential area. The fine for an expired meter will increase from $15
to $25. The largest change will affect commercial vehicles, such as tour
busses. The fine for parking a bus, commercial or sightseeing vehicle in
front of a residence or other restricted space will increase from $20 to
$500.

Over 20 agencies are authorized to write parking tickets on behalf of
the District Government, including the US Capitol Police, the US Park
Police, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Police, DC
Department of Public Works, Metropolitan Police Department, and the US
Mint. The increases were passed by Council last summer as part of the
Fiscal Year 2003 Budget Support Emergency Act of 2002 and published in
the District of Columbia Register on August 23, 2002.

"I live at 43rd and Alton, and have noticed over the last few months
*constant* noise from airplanes (presumably from National), starting
early in the day and going well into the evening.  For the first five
years I lived at this address, noticeable airplane noise was never
routine, just sporadic.  Have flight patterns changed, perhaps since
9/11?"

In case you haven't heard, we can now purchase wind power via PEPCO.
You can do it online at www.wges.com.  There is also a calculator so you
can figure out what your extra cost will be based on your electric
usage.  It is slightly more expensive, but the more of us that do it,
will help to drive the price down.

2110 37TH STREET SOLD
From: "Robert Hyman" <RobertHyman@erols.com>
Today is a great day for Glover Park! I am happy to report that the
owner of 2110 37th st. in Glover Park has finally sold the long vacant
and run down nuisance property. Mayor Williams visited the property
today after learning of the situation while visiting TV Channel 9 and
reported that a crew of men were there cleaning out the property. Just
as I expected the property was filled to the rafters with junk and the
crew was unprepared for what they found inside! I would like to thank
all of you for supporting me in my efforts to "Do the Right Thing" for
our community!
