ABOUT THAT DERELICT BUILDING IN THE 'HOOD. . .
From: <ckurtz@odonoghuelaw.com>
I don't know whom to call about this but I recall something printed
a
past
issue about the vacant building located at the corner of Chesapeake
Street &
Belt Road on Fort Reno Park.
Early this morning while walking my dog, I noticed that the bottom
window
(which sometime ago was boarded up and painted white) was removed
and
appears that someone/s have been entering the building. Considering
recent
robbery and current events, this needs to be investigated immediately
and
the building made more secure in the back. Can you please pass
this on
to
appropriate party/ies? Thanks.

LIBRARY ALERT
From: "Elinor Green and Joel Hunter" <greenhunter@starpower.net>
E-MAIL ALERT TO FRIENDS OF THE TENLEY-FRIENDSHIP NEIGHBORHOOD
LIBRARY
THE DC Library System is in urgent need of your immediate support.
Kevin
Chavous,
Chair of the DC City Council's Parks, Recreation, and Libraries
Committee, will hold a
hearing on the library system's 2004 budget this Thursday, March 20,
at
9:30 AM. The
previous library budget was drastically cut, as you know from the
newly-curtailed library hours. We are asking our members to e-mail
or
telephone the mayor and council
members to urge them not to cut library funding still further. Please
remind them of the
many vital services libraries provide our community. Below is some
proposed language
which you may copy and use, or, better yet, put into your own words
if
you have the time. Either way, please make your voice heard before
Thursday morning.
A rally to support library funding is scheduled to take place on the
steps of the DC City Hall half an hour before the hearing is to begin.
Please join Friends from all over the city to add your voice in support
of adequate library funding. The Council needs to hear from you. Rally
begins at 9 a.m., Thursday, March 20, in front of City Hall, 1350
Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Be there!
Dear Council Member ____:
I am writing as a supporter of the DC Public Library System to urge
the
City Council not
to cut library funding for FY 2004. Libraries provide many vital
services for DC
residents. In times of economic downturn, the library's numerous free
services become
even more crucial. From programs for young children, computer literacy
classes,
computer and internet access, tax assistance, resources for job seekers,
and a safe
place for children after school, libraries reach a broad range of
citizens. Our libraries are too often overlooked when it comes to
funding, leaving many branches in desperate need of maintenance, repairs
and improvements. I urge you to support full funding for the library
system -- it is an investment in our city that will pay off in the
present and future.

WISCONSIN AVENUE BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT
From: <KColombant@aol.com>
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
March and April are fund raising months for the Wisconsin Avenue
Beautification Project.
Last year we organized two clean-up days, we mulched the entire project
twice, we did new planting and some replanting, we planted several
thousand
daffodil bulbs, we had most of the alloted trees planted or replanted,
we
watered, we weeded and did weed control and we picked up trash
about
twice
a month. All this work was done by volunteers who live
in the
neighborhood.
We hope you all have enjoyed the improvement along the avenue.
We were able to continue the maintenance and planting in 2002
because
of
the donations given by neighbors, businesses, institutions and the
ANC3
and
also because of cooperation from the Washington Gas Company, American
University
and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. We hope
that this year
you
will continue to support this project through a generous contribution.
Checks can be made out to WABP (Wisconsin Avenue Beautification Project)
and are tax deductible. The address for the project is 4439 Davenport
st. NW,
Washington DC 20016.
If you need more information call Kersti at 202 966 88 37.
Many thanks for your support
Jo Cooper
Project Chair

RE: TAX ASSESSMENTS
From: <Blecherm@aol.com>
Re: the comments from Mark Eckenwiler (themale@ingot.org) about
assessments, I read
the law differently. What can increase by no more than 25% is the
property tax
from one year to the next, not the property assessment; the latter
can
be
anything with which the assessor can get away . Mr. Eckinwiler's
calculations
do not apply to the assessment, only to the property tax.

RE: INCREASE IN PARKING FINES
From: "Richard J. Oparil and Donna M. DeSilva" <rjodmd@starpower.net>
I would like to reply to the gentle reader complaining about the
increase
in parking fines. The city's actions in this respect are consistent
with
those taken by other large cities such as NYC and Los Angeles.
In
addition to a
revenue stream issues, the real goal is to keep traffic flowing
properly.
For every person who parks in commercial zones, delivery trucks are
required to double park, causing traffic tie-ups and accidents.
For
every person
who keeps their car in a parking space that is supposed to be a travel
lane
during rush hour, at least a hundred other drivers are inconvenienced
by
blocked traffic, and likely to cause accidents trying to get out of
a
lane
that they have every right to be using. These fines are high
as a
deterent
to people just like this gentle reader, who forgets to move his car
on
time.
Without high fines, parking illegally is sometimes cheaper than paying
for
parking in a lot. Move your car, don't park illegal, and you
don't need
to
pay fines. Otherwise, stop complaining. Most people I know have
been
waiting for fines for these offenses that will actually deter illegal
parking, thus keep traffic flowing. One of the major reasons
for the
high
air polution levels in DC is because of high traffic tie-ups.
If high
fines for violations that tie up traffic are necessary to deter
violators, clean
air is worth the price.

THEATER PRODUCTION
From: <nancila@att.net>
I'd like to invite the neighborhood to check out the Horizon's
Theatre production of "That Takes Ovaries!" (exclamation point is the
author's) at the GWU Mt. Vernon campus. The play runs nightly
Thursdays
through
Sundays through March 30. I am part of a six-person ensemble
of
professional
actors in the production.
You can learn more about the show and the cast at the Horizons website
www.horizonstheatre.org Tickets ($22) can also be ordered
through the
website. I can't guarantee you'll like everything about
the show, but
it's a highly entertaining collection of true stories adapted for the
stage and my
fellow/sister actors are hugely talented. And, there's some excellent
original music too, sung by a couple of the best voices in the DC area.
I hope many
of you will check it out. Thanks, Nancy
