CHEVY CHASE HYUNDI/BUICK
From: <NSM5221@aol.com>
Fri, 23 May 2003
I noticed that between last Friday and Saturday the Chevy Chase
Hyundai
across the street was empty!! It sits between the Pepco switching plant
and fronts the metro yard and the metro station is on the other side
(Jennifer Street). Does anyone know if the property has been
sold? Is
metro taking it? What will become of it? I hate to see developers
getting in there with a high rise!!! Or is it just a sign of the times
and they went out of business? Does anyone know? Thanks!

PEPCO ENERGY SERVICES - DOOR-TO-DOOR
From: "Richard L. Paul" <rlpaulproductions@starpower.net>
The other day a young man came to my door saying he represented Pepco
Energy Services. He was wearing a name tag that said he was something
like a "Sales Trainee." He said he was offering a service that
had to
do with alternative energy sources and asked to see my latest Pepco
bill. I happen to know that Pepco Energy Services is not the
same as
Pepco, and I wondered why whatever information he wanted, he couldn't
obtain electronically. I mentioned to him that I knew Pepco and
Pepco
Energy Services were not the same thing and he said, "Trust me sir,
I'm
not trying to scam you." I said, "No I really don't trust you.
Can you
please give me something in writing and I will read it and consider
it?" He gave me a printed brochure from Pepco Energy Services
which
begins with the line, "Maryland lawmakers have enacted landmark
legislation to give consumers the freedom to choose their electricity
supplier" and went on to talk about energy in Maryland. Now maybe
this
"Trainee" wandered over the District line and didn't know he
wasn't in Maryland anymore, but I have my doubts. Anyone else
out there
know anything about this?
[From KS -- sounds like the same person who came to my door several
weeks ago. I too was suspicious when he asked to see my latest bill,
and
told him I wasn't interested. ]
PUBLIC MEETINGS -- Military Road/Missouri Avenue Transportation Study
From: "Bird, Melissa" <mbird@louisberger.com>
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is beginning an
intensive study to investigate traffic and truck management improvements
in the Military Road and Missouri Avenue Corridor from Blair Road,
NE to
Wisconsin Avenue, NW. These efforts are in response to citizen concerns
regarding speeding traffic, excessive truck traffic and other safety
issues. Representatives of DDOT will provide information regarding
the
study area, scope of the project, schedule and will also be available
to
answer questions and solicit public comments from interested parties
during the meeting.
Due to the large size of the study area, DDOT will host TWO PUBLIC
MEETINGS, in two different locations. Each meeting will
be from 7:00
pm to 9:00 pm. The content of both meetings will be similar.
All
residents are welcome to attend either meeting.

UPTON AND YUMA STREETS
From: Gary Melickian <garym@his.com>
Upton Street between Reno Road and Wisconsin has been deteriorating
for
years. The part of the road along the North side of the Washington
Home
is particularly bad. Very recently, I noticed that the portion of Yuma
Street to the East of Tenley Circle is also becoming a basket
case.
Does anybody know if the City has plans to fix these sections of road
surface - in the near future.

THEFTS FROM DOORSTEPS
From: smithhemb@aol.com
Thru: tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
Thu, 22 May, 2003
I had a package stolen from my doorstep (in Friendship Heights on 42nd
St.) this (Thursday) afternoon and wonder if anyone else had the same
experience/wanted to give the rest of the neighborhood a heads-up.
The
thief likes organic veggies but apparently has no use for academicy
books (the box had been opened but everything I ordered was still
there). Don't know what other packages, if any, s/he had to choose
from.

Re Sue Hemberger's stolen package, now I know where my FedEx package
must have gone Thursday afternoon, from 44th St,. in Tenleytown/AU
Park
(which ever one prefers - both names have been around a long time).
The
organic angle is interesting, because my v. expensive, natural vitamins
were taken. Very frustrating. We seemed to go through a
rash of these
a few years ago.
SIDEWALK QUESTION
From: "Richard Graham" <rggraham@earthlink.net>
Some years ago I contacted the ANC rep about the deplorable state of
the
sidewalk on 44th Street between Fessenden and Garrison. I cannot
remember who I talked to, but action was taken apparently, and some
patching was eventually done.
Time to bitch again, and I'm wondering if you know to whom I should
address my complaints. The ANC guy? Dept of Public Works?
Thanks in
advance for your help.
RECYCLING QUESTION

**** French Translation Needed
From: "Carolyn Long" <carolynlong@earthlink.net>
I need help with translating several legal documents such as wills,
inventories, marriage contracts, and property transactions, handwritten
in rather archaic 18th and 19th century French, and copied from
microfilm, which makes them somewhat difficult to read. I can read
French well enough to get the gist of it, but not all the details.
E-mail me if you're interested in doing this and let me know how much
you charge.

Conversational Spanish
For the person looking for Spanish lessons: Maria Gomez (native
Spanish
speaker from Madrid) teaches three levels of Spanish for DC Rec
Department at Guy Mason Rec Center at Wisconsin and Calvert.
Next
Beginners class starts the week of June 9 (register any time before
that) and price is right $60 for 8 1-hour sessions. Beginner's
class is
Wednesday eves from 6 to 7pm. Classes are always small (no more
than 10
usually and mostly fewer). Maria's a good teacher and fun to
boot.
Classes are very informal, low stress. We've also discovered
that there
are occasionally "meet-ups" at Cosi on Dupont Circle -- for unstructured
practicing of Spanish.
**** Power Washing and Sealing
From: Gary Melickian <garym@his.com>
We are looking for an individual who specializes in power washing and
sealing of a deck, steps, and possibly other areas. The person should
provide quality services, be reachable, and charge reasonable rates.
If
anyone has recommendations, it would be appreciated.

POINTS TO PONDER

From: <sheila.young@baltsun.com>
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person
to
use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
Some people are like Slinkies . . . not really good for anything, but
you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.
Have you noticed since everyone has a camcorder these days no one talks
about seeing UFOs like they use to.
Why does a slight tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a
substantial tax cut saves you thirty cents?
How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a
whole box to start a campfire?
