  BOLO IN THE  HOOD
  (Be On The Lookout)
  Aijacelbl@aol.com
I would like to alert the neighbourhood (I live on Fessenden St., not too far
from Wisconsin Ave.) that there might be a person prowling our streets,
trying to see whether people are at home or not. At the very beginning of
September, I was having dinner with a friend, my front door was open (but locked) and
a small lamp was on in the living room. The blinds were not closed at that
time, because it was still light out. When it started getting dark, I went to
the door to close it and to close the blinds, and I saw a man who had just come
up to the sidewalk on a bicycle. As I was closing the door, he waved at me.
I have NO idea who he was. He was a black male, clean shaven, short hair,
regular build (not fat, not thin). He looked as if he wanted to talk to me. I,
of course, sort of waved him away and immediately closed the door. He smiled
and it looked as if he wanted to talk to me. That was the first time. The
second time was this past Tuesday (9/23). At 11:05 p.m., as I was watching the
news, my doorbell rang. By the time I got to the door and turned on the
outside light and peeked from behind my cloth curtains, he was halfway down my
front walk. When he saw the light, he turned around and again waved to me. The
bicycle was on the sidewalk. It was the same guy. He had on a short-sleeved,
dark t-shirt with something written on the front of it, and dark pants. I
have absolutely no idea what he wanted. I presume that he was "casing the
joint". Of course, I did not open the door and immediately called the police.
They came 15 minutes later. They had been riding around, trying to find him.
There had, supposedly, been a burglary on Ingomar (I think) Street a short while
before that. So, all I can say is that we should be looking out for this
  guy.

ALERT RE: VANDALS AND MISSING SLATE
  melblecher@comcast.net
During the night last night, vandals placed on the hood of our new Jag a large, heavy
rectangular piece of gray slate/flagstone, of dimension about 12" x 24" x 2". From the
appearance of the underside, it is clear that the slab had been cemented in place on,
perhaps, someone's low wall. If any one is missing such a slab from his/her property, they
can retrieve it from us. Call 363 0373 or 363 3338.

  HELICOPTERS IN THE  HOOD
  dnielsen@worldbank.org
During the past few months there have been frequently helicopter fly-overs in the Friendship
Heights area, usually around 7-9 pm. The helicopter is often quite low and often has a search
light. It is noisy, annoying and frankly, somewhat frightening (as in "who are they looking
for?"). Can anybody explain what this is all about and why we should put up with it?

UPDATE ON EARLY MORNING WALKING GROUP
  Chhaya_Rao@ace.nche.edu
AU Park and Spring Valley walkers--
Our walking group (a core of about 5 people) is going strong after coming
into existence in early February. (Two stalwarts even walked during the
snowstorms of mid- and late-February.) We've been enjoying the exercise
and camaraderie so much that we've decided to alter our weekly schedule to
  accommodate 3 walks a week.

We now meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday --still at 6:15
sharp--and still in the little parking lot at 49th and Mass. Ave. (across
49th St. from Bagel City). We walk a hilly Spring Valley loop of 2.6 miles
in about 45 minutes. We always return to the parking lot at 7:00 a.m. and
sometimes a couple of minutes before that.

We look forward to meeting more walkers/neighbors this fall. Perhaps this
new schedule and the fact that we've become fairly established in our
routine will tempt some of you to join us one early morning. Just think,
by 7:00, you'll have your morning exercise already under your belt--with
the scintillating (and sometimes sleepy) companionship of some of your
neighbors! E-mail or call me (237-7905) with any questions or for more details.

  LOST CAT FOUND
  Pavukmatt@aol.com
Found: a young female cat, mostly black with tabby stripes of light grey and
brown. White on chest and under chin. Very sociable, friendly and clean -
even dog loving male in household is charmed. Due to a cat allergy in our
household, we cannot adopt this kitty if the owner does not appear. We would
like to find the owner, and if not, a loving adoptive home. Because of the
allergy situation, we hope someone will respond quickly.

  YOGA FOR BONES WORKSHOP
  Notes from class.
  deborahd@cpcug.org
This week we added feet and ankles into the mix. If you missed class give this
  one a try:
  * Hold a tennis ball between your ankles and raise slowly up onto your toes;
  * Hold and count to three;
  * Slowly return your heels back onto the floor;
  * Repeat with three sets ( 6 - 8 lifts / set).

This shows how hard these muscles work to hold our balance. Slowly raising your
heels off the floor is a great way to build strong ankles and improve balance.

We also talked about ways to stimulate the "relaxation response" to offset the
affects of the fight or flight response. If you are interested in reading
further on this subject please check out the web site for the Mind / Body
Medical Institute located in Boston, MA.

  HISTORIC PRESERVATION OF TELEGRAPH TOWER
  davidsr01@mindspring.com
FYI: This is the best way to get American Tower Corporation to remove its
partially (and illegally) built structure in Tenleytown. A determination of
eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places may make
American Tower Corporation subject to enforcement action by the FCC, up to
and including significant monetary forfeiture and an order to remove the
tower. This historic property nomination ONLY covers the masonry former
Western Union Telegraph Company building (and short lattice tower on the
roof of the wing) and does not recommend the other towers at the site for
listing in the National Register. In fact, those towers and the antennas on
them may too be subject to review by the FCC:

  Dear Applicant:
This letter is to inform you that the District of Columbia Historic
Preservation Review Board has scheduled a public hearing on your application
for an official determination of eligibility for listing on the National
Register of Historic Places of the property referenced above. The Board will
consider the application and make a recommendation regarding eligibility in
  a public hearing beginning at 10:00 a. m. on October 23, 2003, at 441 Fourth
Street NW (One Judiciary Square), in Room 220 South.

The Board s hearing is open to all interested parties or persons. Public and
governmental agencies, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, property owners,
and interested organizations or individuals are invited to testifS  before
the Board. Written testimony may also be submitted prior to the hearing.

A copy of your National Register application is currently on file and
