COMMUNIT-E

IF YOU ARE A VICTIM OF A CRIME
Should you become a victim, a useful group of people to know about in the US Attorney’s
  Office
are the community outreach folks connected to 2D. Tim Lucas is the US Attorney attached to
  2D.
He can be reached on 514-7608, at the AUSA office or at 282-0585 at 2D. He will be working
with the police at 2D when they make an arrest and need to paper a case. He can advise you of
your rights and of police and criminal justice procedures.

The Outreach Specialist is Michelle McIver on 282-0585 and the supervisor of the Outreach
Specialists is Sylvai Gorza at 307-2593. Don’t hesitate to call on them for help. That’s what
  they are here for.

IF YOU NEED A POLICE REPORT
There has been some confusion about when and where you can get a Police Report, known as a PD
251 when an officer takes one at your home, business, etc. According to Executive Assistant
Chief Michael Fitzgerald, you should be able to get a report after 24 hours from when it was
taken. In this area, you’d go to 2D at 3320 Idaho Avenue. My advice is to call or e-mail Lt.
Aielllo first to make sure the report will be there when you arrive. Don’t just walk in the
door and ask for it. I mention this because some 2D officers have told residents, including
me, that you need to wait six weeks for it. That is just no so, according to Chief
Fitzgerald. If you have a problem, contact Lt. Aiello, a 2D Captain, or Commander Jeff Moore.
  They can be reached at:
  Lt. Aiello - 282-0038
  2D Captain’s Office – 282-0032
  Commander’s Office - 282-0042
  "Lt. Robert Aiello" <MPDCPSA202@netscape.net>"
  Commander Jeffrey Moore" <JAMOORE.2D-POST@mpdc.org>

If it’s a report taken somewhere else in the city, ask what police district you are in at the
time and either get the report at that district or ask if it can be faxed to 2D. Perhaps Lt.
Aiello can help you to get it faxed up here.

  COUNCILMEMBER PHIL MENDELSON’S ADDRESS
  pmendelson@dccouncil.washington.dc.us
I accidentally left this off the list of councilmembers that I had published last week.

THE VALUE OF BEING A NEIGHBORHOOD WITNESS

Several months ago, the recycling truck backed into my fence, causing a lot of damage. One of
my neighbors happened to see the truck and hear the crash. Another neighbor had gone out
earlier that morning and knew the fence was intact when he left. I had no idea who had backed
into it and did not know that these neighbors had been witnesses and would not have known if
  they hadn’t told me.

My message to you is this: If you see damage being done or an accident, don’t assume your
neighbor saw it too. Make sure you tell them what you saw. It makes the difference between
paying for the repairs yourself and having the company that did the damage pay for them.

But this story goes on . . .

I called the company and gave them the name and phone number of my witness. They still
refused to pay so I called the police. Officer Adrian Sanders was assigned by Lt. Aiello to
take on the task. He was perfect for the job. He talked to my witnesses and then called the
recycling company. They eventually agreed to settle without my having to go to court. If you
find yourself in this type of situation I would urge you to contact Lt. Aiello and
specifically ask for Officer Sanders. He is extremely skillful in this type of situation. All
police officers are not equal. Some are much better than others at specific tasks.

WHERE TO PLACE THE JUVENILE LAW BREAKERS
Apparently there is no place in the district to place nonviolent but serious lawbreaking
juveniles. The choice, as I understand it, is between Oak Hill which is a real prison and
half way houses which are sieves. The youngsters apparently leave at will.

The need for something in-between the above is illustrated in the case of one young man who
has been arrested 47 times (I kid you not) in DC for auto theft and other serious crimes. In
addition to this, he has also been arrested in PG County on numerous occasions. So far he has
served a total of two months in jail.

Hello. What am I missing here?

Oak Hill is being used for really violent juvenile offenders - murderers, rapists, armed
robbers - that type of prisoner. I would agree that a nonviolent criminal should go somewhere
else. This kid is into serious joyriding in a big way and his crime is serious but he hasn’t
killed or raped anyone. So what do we do with him and all the others like him? These kids are
  semi-hard core, not hard-core.

I’m told that $18 million has been budgeted to build a residential learning facility for
juveniles like this, but it has has yet to be built. What’s the problem here?

It seems to me that if we can get a new huge convention center we ought to be able to get a
facility to lock down the kids who are stealing cars left and right. Any suggestion out
  there?

  ROBBERS ARRESTED
  From: Jeffrey Moore <JAMOORE@mpdc.org>
Posted on Friday, October 10, 2003

On Thursday, Oct 9, 2003, at approx 11:30 p.m., the Dominos Pizza store in the 4500 blk Wisc
Ave was robbed by three black males, two of which were armed with handguns. The three
suspects entered the pizza shop and robbed the store, and the store manager of his personal
belongings. All three fled to a dark sedan and made their escape.

A short time later, a lone female was robbed in the 3200 blk Albemarle St by a single black
male who was armed with a handgun. This suspect fled to a dark sedan and escaped.

Not long after the second robbery, officers of the Second District stopped a vehicle that
matched the description in both robberies. Three black males who matched the description were
detained and positively identified by both the pizza store manager and the lone female
victim. A large amount of cash was recovered. Also recovered was the 2 handguns that had been
hidden under the hood in the engine compartment.

Further investigation has revealed that these suspects have been involved in as many as 10
similar robberies in Montgomery County, Prince Georges County and Alexandria. In each of
these jurisdictions, the robberies occurred at pizza stores.

I will keep you informed our progress in this case.

  Jeff Moore
  Commander
  Second District

  **** From: W. Geoffrey Seeley <seemark@ATT.NET>
A package sent to my house was stolen off my front porch today in
broad daylight; it was dumped by the thief two blocks away, when he
discovered it contained nothing more interesting than cabinet doors.
The owner of the house in whose yard it was dumped kindly found me, and
I was able to retrieve them, none the worse for wear. This is just
another indication that this neighborhood is always being observed by
thieves and package deliveries are fair game. I don't know what the
solution is, when it's impossible to be home to sign for everything
  that comes to the door.....

CHURCH AT 45TH AND RIVER ROAD
  margaretsg2@hotmail.com
I am writing to ask if you have heard anything about the proposed sale of
the property on which River Road Presbyterian Church and its Administriation
offices (corner of River and 45th Street) now stands. There is a rumor about
condominiums being developed there. We live across the street from the church
and are very concerned. Where can we find out more about it and what is the
forum to which we can bring our concerns and ask to be kept informed?
I spoke with one of the church staff today and learnt that the administration office will
close on Dec. 1 and they will move to a new office on Connecticut Avenue.

FINAL RESULTS OF WISCONSIN AVENUE STUDY

Office of Planning is holding a public meeting to present the final result of the Wisconsin
Avenue Study at 7:00 October 27, St. Columba's Church, 4201 Albemarle. Communication between
  Office of Planning and the citizens must have totally broken down since Robert Collins left;
his replacement apparently didn't have, or didn't use, his e-mail list of all the people
who've worked very hard and been involved with this since the beginning. If I hadn't
accidentally come across it in the Current, I wouldn't have even known about the meeting.

  CHILD CARE REFERRALS
We are expecting our first child in February, 2004 and are searching for a
highly recommended day care center or other day care provider (starting in

waiting lists. We would welcome any recommendations for either family care
centers or a family who would be interested in sharing a full time "Nanny." Please

  **** From: Donna DeSilva <rjodmd@comcast.net>
I am seeking a recommendation of where to purchase a glass to cover my
brand new tabletop. I has similar glass cut in NYC 15 years ago when I
purchased my last dining room set. I do not know where to purchase
such glass in the DC metro area. Any help from someone who has made
such a purchase would be appreciated. Thanks. Donna DeSilva

I am also wishing to sell my old dining room set to someone who
refinishes/restores furniture to resale or for their own use. It is a
french colonial set from Ethan Allen, which includes a oblong table,
with a leaf, plus four side chairs and two arm chair. All of the
chairs need resortation (the glue seems to have failed over the years,
so that various arms, backs, etc. are loose or come off when pulled to
hard) the table has no such problems, but its top finish was marred
when the glass tabletop which protected it for years was broken by a
spill of hot liquid. Anyone interested in the set can come by and see
it, anyone who knows someone or a company which might purchase these
items is asked to contact me, Donna DeSilva rjodmd@comcast.net.

Finally, I would like to recommend River Road Auto Haus as an
exceptional mechanic for all brands of automobilies. I have been
taking my BMW to them for service since I moved to DC last year. They
have provided me with exceptional, timely, convenient, and honest
service on my vehicle at a reasonable rate for sometime now. I once
made the mistake of taking my car to the BMW dealers in the area. VOB
BMW gave me appointment several weeks away and then called me later to
state that they could not take my car for service since I had not
purchased there and they were only service their own purchased during
construction. They sent me to Fairfax BMW, where I had to wait a week
for an appointment, drive at least 45 minutes to an inconvenient
location somewhere off the beltway/Dulles Toll road area, and after
they kept my car for two days they could do nothing to repair the major
problems with the electronic panel and radio for which I brought the
car to them. I returned my car to River Road Auto Haus thereafter,
where the owner explained the BMW are reknowned for these type of
problems, and as long they did not interfere with the actual
functioning of the car, I could ignore them. After an equally bad
experience at VOB on servicing my husband's Saab, I now bring our car's
exclusively to River Road Auto Haus. Tell them Donna DeSilva sent you.
Oh and by the way, River Road Auto Haus has been written up by Dr.
Gridlock in his survey seeking recommended auto repair providers. They
are on the corner of River Road and little Falls Road. I hope this
helps some of you in my AU park hood. Donna DeSilva rjodmd@comcast.net

  TREE REMOVAL

**** From: Pagano, Penny (COUNCIL) <ppagano@dccouncil.us>
Councilmember Kathy Patterson's office received several calls yesterday of
new trees that fell after the rain and winds on Tuesday night. Others have
been mentioned on the listservs. We would like to make sure that DDOT and
PEPCO (if there are wires involved) have a full list of all new trees that
have come down and where power is out as a result. Please email us any
information you have about new trees that are down so we can follow up with
  DDOT and PEPCO.

If a tree needs real attention, The Growing Earth 703-818-8228 is an excellent tree service-
true arborists, skilled, bonded, etc. However, if it is just blown over and needs to be cut
up and hauled off, they are probably a bit expensive. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE a group called
John M Dyer - they charged my 83 year old widowed mother $1,450 for work that 3 guys did in
under 3 hours- actually under 2.5 hours!!!! - no big trees or anything, just cleanup/pruning
work- they promised they'd completely clean up the yard, clear things out, etc. Left debris
in the gutter, and when things were pointed out as not done, they said she never included
them. It was a "clean up to her satisfaction" job- did they think she was planning on paying
over 500/hour for pruning a few specified items!!!!

  BOLOS IN THE ‘HOOD

  **** From: Leslie Marinaccio <lmarinaccio@yahoo.com>
Has anyone else asked about a guy cold canvassing the
neighborhood on Sunday, 10/12? He is an African
American male (slight build - 20's)claiming to be in a
half-way house. He claims he gets "credits" for
talking to people in the community. What he really
wants is for people to make a contribution/buy
  magazines. He gets extremely argumentative/defensive
when you try to tell him you're not interested.

  **** From: North - Percy <pnorth@umd5.umd.edu>
I had an encounter with a suspicious person at 9:20 on Thursday night.
There was someone at my door when I returned home and I thought it might be a friend
and so I honked my horn - then when I realized that it wasn't -
I told him not to put anything on my door. In retrospect I am
certain that he was looking in my windows to case the house.
My easy access windows have special locks AND plexi storm windows
that are screwed in place and I have a metal security door
with double locks and a locked gate to the garden (but still)

He was a youthful but not teenage black male of modest height
(taller than I am but I am very short - I'd guess he was 5'6" to
5'8". He was wearing a dark colored (navy or black) baseball cap,
and a navy blue large football shirt with white numerals (I didn't
catch them. He also had on what I thought were jeans (it was dark)
and I paid no attention to his shoes. (I was tired it was late
and I was very annoyed to be bothered).

He said that he was from a half way house and that he was selling
magazines. He flourished a sheaf of papers - that I didn't look at.
Then he told me that I could make a donation if I didn't want to
buy any magazines. I told him that it was too late to be bothering people.

I have meant to ask my neighbors if he came to their doors.....I
suspect not. There houses looked more as if they were home. I have
security lights on timers in the house - but some of the windows are
curtainless and one can look in if one peers hard enough through the
  plants.

My gut reaction is that he was a nasty character - and was probably
not even what he said he was. We did have a conversation. I might' be able to
  identify him.

  **** From:Carolyn Long <carolynlong@earthlink.net>
Early this afternoon [Wednesday Oct.15] I was working in my front yard on Alton Place. A
person was sitting in a dark-colored, new-model car with DC plates with the motor running. It
looked like a woman wearing sunglasses, but I couldn't see well through the tinted glass. She
was there for a really long time. It seemed as though she was waiting for me to leave.
Finally I went around the back of the house for a few minutes, and just as I returned a
similar dark-colored car pulled up beside her and a person on the passenger side handed her
something through the window. Then she backed all the way down Alton Place to 38th, and the
other car pulled a few doors up and parked in front of the garage of the house at the corner
of Alton and 39th. There were two people in the car, apparently men. They were there for at
least 40 minutes. I was watching them but trying not to be obvious about it. At one point I
walked around my neighbor's house and was able to write down th! e license number: DC
#AM-6902. I went in the house and when I came back outside the car sped off. This was
  probably about 3:00.

  SIDWELL NEXT-TO-NEW SALE
  From: Smartmarriages® <cmfce@smartmarriages.com>
This comes under the category of best kept secrets - the kind it's tempting
to keep to yourself - The Sidwell Next-to-New sale. It's awesome. A
neighbor convinced me to check it out last year, so I feel obligated to pass
it on. They have it all (an excess of having it all) - furniture, bikes,
dishes, housewares, art, videos, cds, tvs, computers, software, sport and
exercise equipment, office equipment, beautiful clothes, baby furniture and
equipment, kid's clothes, jewelry, coats, boots, books, puzzles, games - and
so many toys it looks like Toys-R-Us. Some of the stuff is still in boxes
and some clothes still have tags. Every single item is clearly marked which
is nice. You don't have to wonder - or ask anyone. Makes it quick and easy.
Cash only - I had to run to the ATM - but they'll save your stuff for you.

It's at the Sidwell Friends school campus on Wisconsin - next to the post
office and across from Fannie Mae - in the 3800 block of Wisconsin. I
parked on the street behind the school. You can drive in to pick up big
items. Last year I bought two rockers and a wooden file cabinet plus tons
of toys. And, I got there late on Friday.

It's this Fri and Sat, Oct 17 & 18. They open 9:30 Fri morning and are open
late, till 8pm on Friday. Sat open 8am - 4pm. I imagine there will be an
ad in the paper, though I've never seen one.

NOTES FROM OUR FOURTH YOGA CLASS-YOGA FOR THE BONES
  From: Deborah Dougherty <deborahd@cpcug.org>
Although you have not had a chance to come to the Tuesday morning yoga class at
St. Columba's the notes from last weeks class might be of interest. This week
(10/14) will be the 6th class in this 10 class series. Feel free to visit and
try this unique style of yoga.

This week we added two standing poses into the mix, the Triangle pose (Utthita
Trikonasana) and Warrior Pose II (Virabhadrasana). These poses strengthen arms,
legs and back muscles, tone the abdominal organs, and help to improve balance.
Each pose can be done using a chair, wall or simply "free standing".

The class hand out provides a good explanation of the Warrior Pose--just follow
  the instructions.

The Triangle pose (front side of handout) works this way:

  * Stand on your yoga mat and raise your arms into a "T" position
  * Step or jump your feet about 3.5 to 4 feet apart
  * Turn your right foot out 90 degrees and rotate your left foot slightly
  inward
  * Bend over your right leg and extend your right arm down to the inside of
  your shin
  * Raise your left arm toward the ceiling
  * Pull your upper ribs back; open your chest
  * Hold for about 30 seconds and repeat on the other side.

***************************** Please practice both poses before class #5
  *****************************
  Relaxation
In class #3 we talked about ways to stimulate the "relaxation response" to
offset the affects of the fight or flight response. If you are interested in
reading further on this subject please check out the web site for the Mind /
Body Medical Institute located in Boston, MA.
