  MPD HANDBOOK FOR STALKING VICTIMS
I mentioned this in the last issue. At least one neighbor had trouble getting a copy. I just
received a call from Sgt. Giles at 2D to say that the booklets are now available on the
counter at 2D at 3320 Idaho Avenue. It still would be a good idea to call there first, to
make sure they still have copies before you go over. The phone number is 282-0070. Let me
know if you have trouble getting a copy. – KS

CRIMES OF INTEREST IN THE ‘HOOD

**** There are a lot of autos broken into. If this happens to you, check to make sure that
your Vin number plate hasn’t been stolen. That’s the number on the inside, under the
windshield. There’s a hot illegal trade in these. Sometimes thieves will break into the car
just to get this item. They then put it on a stolen car.

  **** PSA 202 9/25/2003 1200 Hours
  THEFT - 2
4500 Block 40TH ST NW [Whole Foods]
C1 reports that unknown person(s) stole various property from her purse when it was left
  unsecured as c1 was shopping.

[From KS – NEVER place a purse or wallet in a shopping cart or basket, not even if the basket
  is on your arm.]

**** If you believe that a towing company has taken your car without proper authorization, or
has held it without notifying you or the police, the MPD Detective to contact is: Perry
Soares at 724-6566. If you can't reach him, call Det. Danny Straub at 724-1359. They are in
  the MPD Auto Theft Unit.

  **** From: Bette Land <betteland@hotmail.com>
Someone tried to steal my very old Honda Accord early this morning, By the total grace of God
my nextdoor neighbor spotted them at 4 a.m., turned her porch light on and frightened them
off. All they succeeded in doing was to steal small change and break the handle off of my
  fortunately locked glove comaprtment.

I am beginning to wonder, as I read more and more of these incidences, plus, this is the
third time this has happened to me alone, if neighbors shouldn't
discourage these theft attempts by perhaps banding together and leaving porch lights lit
  during the night.

[From KS – This is an excellent suggestion. I have front and back outdoor lights on all
night. It is definitely a deterrent to thieves, who prefer to work in the dark.]

  MORE ON THE MAGAZINE VENDORS
  From: Carolyn Long <carolynlong@earthlink.net>
The check that I wrote to the young magazine vendor on September 25 was deposited to the
account of Great Lakes Circulation, Evergreen National Bank. No city indicated. In my
estimation, this indicates that this was not a scam, that the magazine sales were legitimate,
and that the funds weren't going directly into the pockets of the young vendors.

[From Kathy Smith – Regardless of the legal status of these vendors, I think it’s generally a
bad idea to buy things from strangers who come to the door. There are a lot of scams out
there and the consumer has to be especially wary. Officer Adrian Sanders warns against buying
candy from the kids who come around and are not from this area. He says that older guys use
the kids to gather information about who’s home, who appears to not be too sharp, etc. He
also reminds us that we don’t have to open our doors to anyone.]

NEW PARKING SIGNS ON HARRISON STREET
From: Carol Lynn Calomiris, Esquire <ccalomiris@calomirislaw.com>
There are new parking signs on the South side of Harrison Street by Fox
Channel 5. Previously, there were no parking signs. These new signs do not
have the Permit 3 exception on them. Since we are the first block off
Wisconsin Avenue, many patrons of the stores and restaurants on Wisconsin
use our street to park. This transient use drastically limits the
residential street parking on our block. We residents frequently need to
park our cars for more than two hours and were previously able to use both
sides of the street. Now, we can only use the North side which is half as
long as the South side of the block. If we use the South side for more than
two hours we get ticketed. Although I understand the need to have parking
limits on the South side of Harrison Street, I believe that the signs should
  have the Permit 3 exception.

Does anyone know who I can contact regarding this matter? I would really
  appreciate your help. Thanks.

A young male cat named Smoky needs a good home. He is black and gray with a
white chin and green eyes, smart as the dickens, and with the friendliest and
most loving personality seen in cat or dog. This cat cuddles with you in the
bed, kisses, and immediately begins purring when you touch him. He is totally
outstanding and everyone who has met him really likes him. The problem is
that he has feline HIV. Friendship says he must be an indoor cat, will probably
live a long time, but he can't be in a household with other cats. They said
it does not transmit to other species, including people. Smoky would be
perfect in a one-cat household with someone who has and wants to receive a lot of
love. Even my husband (definitely not a cat person) loves Smoky.
