REMINDER ABOUT CAR REGISTRATION
From: Kathleen.Conley@frb.gov
Remember to check when your car registration expires and do not depend
on receiving a reminder from DMV. I did not get a reminder and when I
went to Georgetown Park to renew it, I was told that the notices have not
been going out because of some kind of computer or printer problems.
Renewing at Georgetown Park was easy (be sure to bring proof of current
insurance along with your drivers license and registration card).
--------
ADDENDUM:
"A letter received after my registration had expired (and after I visited
Georgetown Park to renew it) confirmed the printing and production problems
for renewal notices for registrations expiring in October and November
2004. The letter indicates that special vehicle registration renewal hours
have been scheduled for Georgetown Park, Brentwood Square, and Penn Branch
Shopping Center on Saturdays, November 13 and 20, from 8:15 a.m. to noon."

REVIEW OF VAMOOSE BUS TO NEW YORK
I took the bus last weekend and found it to be a good ride. The bus is not
marked as a Vamoose bus (they don’t own their own). If you use it, it
parks across the street from the entrance to Hollywood Video. You need
to go across and ask if that is the Vamoose bus. My only complaint was
that I could have lived without the movie. Otherwise, it was a fine bus
and excellent value at $35 round trip. It has a restroom on board and stops
for about 20 minutes at one on the food/rest stops on Interstate 95. Its
website is www.vamoosebus.com – KS.

RE: BOOK DONATIONS

**** From: Marthans@aol.com
Try Books for America. A man names Steve Hersey used to run it; don't know
if he still does. The number I have for him is 997-1592. Alternatively, most of
the neighborhood public libraries have Friends groups that hold used book sales
to raise money for the library. At Tenley-Friendship, we have suspended our
sales because the library is closing for rebuilding in January. Cleveland Park,
Palisades, Georgetown and Chevy Chase accept donations though. For info,
contact the local branch.

MORE ON LOCAL GAS STATION
**** From: Fmanibog@worldbank.org
I read the recent complaints (see below) from W. Maiorana and R. Shale about
Capital Amoco on Wisconsin Ave. I sued Capital Amoco last year for a faulty
oil change that caused an oil leak, which locked up and required the replacement
of my car's entire engine for almost $7,000. As a matter of public record, the trial
was last April 15, 2004 in Rockville, and the court ruled in my favor. However,
I have not received any compensation as IDK (the owner of this Capital Amoco) is
appealing.

TREE REGULATIONS PUBLISHED FOR COMMENT
From: Rice, Bill (DDOT) <Bill.Rice@dc.gov>

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) republished in the D.C.
Register on Friday, November 12, proposed regulations to put into effect the
Urban Forest Preservation Act of 2002 for a 30-day comment period.

If approved by the Council, the regulations will require that a property
owner obtain a permit before removing a non-hazardous "Special Tree,"
defined as one with a circumference larger than 55 inches when measured at a
height of 4.5 feet. If a permit is issued, the owner will pay a fee of $35
per circumference-inch into a tree fund or plant saplings equal in
circumference to the removed tree or both.

The Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) in DDOT will administer the law,
including issuing permits and imposing fines for violations. These funds
will go toward planting additional trees in the District. Either the UFA or
a certified arborist can determine whether a Special Tree is either
hazardous or is a tree species that is not protected from removal, including
Mulberry, Ailanthus and Norway Maple.

A number of changes have been made to the proposed rules since they were
initially published earlier this year, including provisions that require the
UFA to act within 40 days of the submittal of a permit application to remove
a Special Tree, extend the time for which permits are valid, allow a person
or non-governmental entity to remove a hazardous tree before obtaining a
permit and increase the locations where replacement trees may be planted.

The proposed rules on are on the DDOT web site, ddot.dc.gov, under Urban
Forestry, and Office of the Secretary's web site (os.dc.gov., Office of
Documents, D.C. Register) and in the DC Register (51 DCR 10471, Nov. 12,
2004).

Comments are due by December 13, 2004, to Ainsley Caldwell, Associate
Director, District Department of Transportation, Urban Forestry
Administration, 4901 Shepherd Parkway, SW, Washington, D.C. 20032,
