ANNUAL STATS
The following are annual Part 1 crime numbers for PSA 202. The break between
1991 and 1996 occurs because the Department is in the process of loading its
old
data into a new system, and is currently in a form that is difficult for me
to tally.

Hom.,  Rape,  Rob.,  Bur.,  Sto/Au,  T/F/Au,  Theft,  Assau.,  Arson
1990 - Total 892
1   2   81  238 40  222 292 16  0
1991 - Total 995
1   0   61  195 71  282 371 14  0
1996 - Total 992
1   0   59  167 72  270 405 17  1
1997 - Total 793
1   2   69  120 86  188 319 7   1
1998 - Total 747
1   3   48  97  57  178 350 13  0
1999 - Total 716
0   1   34  83  83  228 270 17  0

I have no real knowledge of why the total numbers are going down,
but I would be remiss if I did not point out that Autumn of 1997
was the beginning of  the PSA system.  Bobby Ladson has been the
Sergeant of  PSA 202 from September of  '97 to the present, plugging
away at a pretty thankless task. We tend to take some of these guys
for granted. Maybe we shouldn't.

SCAM ALERT
From:   jacoby@sptimes.com (Jacoby, Mary)

Hi. Could you please post this warning about a company called Johnson's
Power-Vac of Alexandria? They are a chimney-sweep/furnace-cleaning company.
We recently called them to service our furnace. The man from Johnson's
misrepresented himself as a Washington Gas contractor then turned off our
heat on a cold day because he said the tiles in our chimney furnace flue
were crumbling and preventing proper ventilation. For a mere $2500, he said,
Johnson's could re-line the flue. But until we paid up, the heat would
remain off. Of course, this all turned out to be a complete scam. I'd like
to pass the information on so others can avoid this dishonest company (and
hopefully prevent someone from falling the scam). Thanks, Mary Jacoby

HELP NEEDED FOR SOME WILSON & DEAL STUDENTS
Some students who attend Wilson and Deal are also members of The Metropolitan
Police Boys & Girls Club # 8,  the club in Wards 2 & 3.  Club # 8 shares a
field with Wilson at the Duke Ellington School in Georgetown, but needs a
place to store Club # 8's football and baseball equipment. It would like to
lease two buildings on the field site, which are currently vacant, from the
D.C. Public Schools, the owner of  these two buildings.  There seems to be
some problem in getting an answer from the D.C. Schools to the Club's offer
of  a $10,000 five-year lease.

If someone out there could help the Club to either get a reply from the
School System or find another place to store the athletic equipment, the
dedicated officers who work with the students, not to mention the students
themselves,  would really appreciate the help. For more information, contact
Officer Arthur Pannell at 957-0190.

LOCAL SNOW REMOVAL
From:   sharip@cs.umd.edu (Shari Lawrence Pfleeger)

Thanks to Communit-E, Friends of Friendship Park, and other
vehicles, our neighborhood has often come together to deal with a variety
of problems that affect us all.  I'd like to propose that we do the same
by encouraging each other and our neighbors to clear their sidewalks right
away after a snowfall.  We moan and groan about whether our streets are
being plowed on time, but we don't always make sure that pedestrians have
safe sidewalks on which to walk.  We complain that the mail isn't being
delivered, but the mail carriers can hardly make their way to our houses
on the snow- and ice-covered pavements.  And we shouldn't forget the old
or handicapped folks.  If you have a neighbor for whom shoveling is a real
burden, then please make arrangements with the other, nearby neighbors to
take responsibility for clearing their sidewalks and pathways.

If each of us makes an effort to shovel the walks promptly and completely,
life in the 'hood will be much easier for all of us.

From:   vwheeler@erols.com (Val & John Wheeler)

It seems that we are very good at complaining about poor city
services, but how about our own responsibilities?  It seems that on many
streets the majority of sidewalks in front of homes have not been
cleared of snow.  The worst I've seen is the 4200 block of Alton.  Here
it is a week after the last snow, yet only 3 walks in front of houses
have been cleared.  But every car has had the snow cleared from around
them for days, so it's not that people do not have the ability to
shovel.  Many of the houses have shoveled a path from their steps into
the street, but not bothering with their own walks.  This street is less
than a block from the Janney School, and a major walkway to Janney, Deal,
and Wilson schools, as well as the subway.

But one shoveling job stands out:  the walks around the Hechingers.
METRO might have done the Wisconsin Ave. side, but I doubt that it did
Albermarle. Whoever cleared those walks deserves special recognition.

MORE TV RECEPTION
From:   kayandpaul@erols.com (kayandpaul)

We changed from DC Cablevision to Starpower, hoping that would give us 1)
more channels and 2) better reception of channels 4 and sometimes 7.  We
live at about Reno Road and Albemarle, so we had different channel problems.
Well, Starpower couldn't cure the Channel 4 problem with Cable, so it put in
an A/B switch, which would be available at Radio Shack, so I am receiving
Channel 4 on the air.

Incidentally, although Starpower was eager and did solve that problem, they
don't have some of the channels I wanted, such as News Channel 8 and Family,
and they are almost impossible to reach on the phone.

From:   sellis@exchange.usia.gov (Ellis, Susan)

I have district cablevision and am thinking of changing to Starpower, so
welcome any comments -- particularly adverse -- that anyone has.
All my regular broadcast channels USUALLY have "ghosts" or even worse but
Channel 4 is ALWAYS a problem getting clear.  I live at 42nd St. near
Military Rd.  Sometimes, at different times of day, the broadcast channels
clear up perfectly.  I don't understand it at all.
A District cablevision technician is coming this weekend to adjust.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
From:   lenkind@od.nih.gov (Lenkin, Dona (CIT))

Hi -  we moved into the neighbor a few months ago and are looking for a
cleaning
person once a week.  In our former neighborhood the online newsletter (similar
to COMMUNIT-E) was a great source for identifying resources such as this.  Any
suggestions where to look to find a good person?  Thanks Dona
