HOME DEPOT-- NOT A DONE DEAL YET
It's not here until it's here. There are lots of details to be worked out
that will impact on the size and parking capabilities of the new Home Depot.
I urge all interested residents to come to the community forum at the store
on Tuesday, July 25 at 7:30.

TEENAGE PANHANDLERS

From: Resident who asked not to be named:
We have always had our panhandlers around the Tenleytown Metro--people who
are obviously mentally or physically disabled or dysfunctional and in real
need. In the past week, we have been encountering teenagers, who seem to be
perfectly well-off, asking for money. One day my husband got on the elevator
with a group of young girls, one white, the others black, and was asked for
money for the Metro. Last night one boy among a group of white kids in "punk"
attire (didn't that go out of style about fifteen years ago?) asked us for
money. When I told him he ought to be ashamed of himself, he cursed me out.
Are these just isolated incidents or have others been approached? Who are
these kids--Wilson, Friends School, AU?

(Additional item from same resident):
Remember the White Punk Gang I wrote you about? It was pointed out to me
yesterday that they camp out in between the blocks of bike lockers at the
Metro, have wrenched the doors off some of them, which are now filled with
trash and liquor bottles, as is the area in between, and the lockers are
covered with anti-social graffiti. Who is responsible for policing and
keeping this area clean? The cops? Metro? Who should I call?

IONA VOLUNTEER TRAINING

From:   ABiagas@iona.org (Alena Biagas)
Thank you so much for placing an announcement for IONA in the Communit-E
newsletter.  We are having an upcoming training here at IONA on Saturday,
August 5, 2000, if you could find some way to mention that as well.  I think
it is important for people in the community to volunteer at IONA, because we
serve them in turn. My phone number is (202) 895-9425.

STOP SIGNS HIDDEN BY TREES

From:   kayandpaul@erols.com  (Kay McClenon)
As many of you may have noticed, a great many of the stop signs on side
streets in Ward 3 are hidden, or nearly so, by tree branches.  This has been
a problem for the last few summers, and is dangerous for drivers who are not
aware of the signs.  I talked to the person in charge of stop signs in the
Division of Traffic Services, who said he only has 3 people doing anything to
stop signs, and wouldn't do anything about surveying the stop signs for
visibility.

The Tree Division has the responsibility for trimming the offending trees,
but will only do so at specific sites reported to them.  I am hoping that
those of you who have cell phones and notice hidden stop signs will call in
to 727-5319 and report each one you notice.  I also plan to write to Kathy
Patterson and the at-large City Council members about this.  Do you have any
other suggestions? Thanks.

*** From: sellis@pd.state.gov (Ellis, Susan)
I need to purchase a dumbwaiter to go from my main floor to second floor and
also need someone to install it.  If anyone knows where I could purchase one
for a home (I've called several numbers from the internet and those companies
only do office
buildings), please let me know at: sellis@pd.state.gov  or call 202-244-8013.
Thank you.

*** From: shorsey@erols.com (Sarah Horsey)
Have you any information about persons who will do hauling of "stuff"
to the dump?  we are clearing out our garage and need some help from someone
who has a truck. most of our "stuff" is not that heavy but there is one old
metal/glass window.  Thanks.

*** From: themail@dcwatch.com -- License Renewal
Margaret Siegel, masiegel@consultingwomen.com
My son renewed his license in 20 minutes at the H Street NE Community
service center this past winter, and I took his advice and a few weeks
ago did the same -- it's hiding behind Murry's Steaks in the 600 block
of H Street NE and is open from 11-6:30 or so -- there's free parking,
staff people were incredibly nice, there were no lines, and I was
delighted to get a new license quickly and efficiently, with pleasant
staff and no hassles.

AU STUDENTS

From:   jfcanon@earthlink.net (John Canon)
I have lived in Windom Place, NW near Wisconsin Ave. for five years.  During
that time,  I have endured many days, evenings and late nights disturbed by
the drunken revelry of AU students who live in rental houses on the block.

These students are out of control.  They have parties with loud music, dozens
of guests who cluster on the front porches and scream obscenities, and
generally act in ways that are offensive and extremely intrusive for the rest
of us on the block (excluding the other students who are having their own
parties).  While the police respond quickly to complaints and restore quiet
for the remainder of the night (usually), the parties return the next week or
the next night.  I am at the point of selling my house and moving from the
area.  Unfortunately, due to the number of complaints on record, I would be
obliged to reveal the situation to a prospective buyer, rendering the house
much less desirable and less valuable than if the situation did not exist.

I am wondering if anyone reading this letter knows of a way to make this
behavior stop.  The AU Dean of Students says she has no jurisdiction over
students living off campus.  Are there any legal means to get them evicted
(the landlords say they can do nothing due to DC's pro-renter laws) or make
them subject to arrest and prosecution or fines for their behavior?

These drunken, unruly, irresponsible, abusive adolescents dramatically lower
the quality of my (and my neighbors') life at home (not to mention the value
of my house), they endanger motorists by driving home from the parties in a
state of binge-drunkenness and they are extremely volatile and a danger to
those who confront them (I was recently assaulted by guests of the party next
door, resulting in a trip to the emergency room, numerous doctors visits,
MRI, CAT scan, X-rays and post-concussive symptoms which have persisted for
seven weeks and are expected to continue for two months more).

Could someone who knows how to deal with this situation post a response or
e-mail me directly?  Thank you.
