HOME DEPOT REMINDER
The date and time for the community hardware store meeting is at the
Hechinger store on Tuesday, July 25 at 7:30.  This meeting could have a big
influence on the size and quality of the hardware store that Home Depot sets
up there.

If you can't  make it but want to express your views, send them to Tad
DiBiase at thomas.dibiase@usdoj.gov.

BUS ROUTE INFORMATION
From:   sposniak@clark.net (Stephen Posniak)
On the N-3, Bette Land did a great job of describing it.  ANC-3E printed
up labels for all of its current residents, and WMATA has promised to mail
a summary letter and copies of the new schedule to everyone.  If you live
in ANC-3E, and haven't gotten such a letter by 7/31, please contact
Lorraine Taylor at WMATA <ltaylor@wmata.com> and me <sposniak@clark.net> .
In the meantime, pass on Bette's information to anyone else who might
benefit from it.

ONLINE SCAMS AND URBAN MYTHS

Combating On-line Scams
Ron Eberhardt, RGE1022@aol.com
As we all already know, on-line scams are as plentiful as street crime.
You have probably received well intentioned warnings from friends about
everything from not dialing area code 809 to HIV-laden needles affixed
to gasoline pumps and darkened theater seats. Each urgently circulated
the globe. Of course, these and many more are hoaxes. Here is a web site
worth looking at or subscribing for free to keep up with all of the
phony warnings and Internet scams: http://www.scambusters.org.

MORE ON AU STUDENTS WHO ARE BAD NEIGHBORS
From:   sposniak@clark.net (Stephen Posniak)
David Taylor <taylor@american.edu> , is the Executive Assistant to President
Ladner.  AU is still putting together their new 10 year campus plan, and Mr.
Taylor is coordinating it with the community. They claim that commercial AU
locations (as well as off-campus housing) are not covered, but I am trying to
convince them that it would be in their best interest to address these issues
in their plans, if they want to avoid perpetual squabbles (and possible
litigation) with neighbors. AU cannot get away scott-free from these types of
problems, but Kathy Patterson is right that leaning on the landlord is also a
good idea.

IMPORTANT NOTICE -- Because AU is putting together a new 10 year campus plan,
as Steve Posniak notes above, I would like to run a special issue in
Communit-E on the problem of AU students who live off campus and are bad
neighbors. I see no reason why the university cannot set policies that
students who habitually annoy their neighbors with loud late parties cannot
be subject to school punishment.  I also see no reason why landlords should
be able to rent to such problem students year after year. Therefore I invite
all who are interested to submit your comments and advice on this matter. I
will run one or more special issues, depending on the volume of the comments.
These issues will be shared with AU President Benjamin Ladner and Executive
Assistant David Taylor as well as all Communit-E recipients.  As usual,  your
name and e-mail will be published with your comments unless you specifically
ask me to make them anonymous. --  Kathy Smith

HOTLINE FOR EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR HOMELESS
From: dcwatch
FROM: T.J. Sutcliffe, someadvocacy@erols.com
I'm the Advocacy Coordinator at So Others Might Eat, or SOME, a
nonprofit now in its 30th year of service to individuals and families
who are homeless in D.C. The District operates a 24-hour
hotline for shelter: 1-800-535-7252. In the summer, whenever the heat
index rises above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the District opens "cooling
centers" and has several vans that will bring people cold water and also
transport people seeking shelter. In the winter, the same hotline links
people to blankets and hypothermia services including shelter.

Problems with the shelter hotline itself can be reported to the
Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, the umbrella
organization that coordinates the District's public emergency shelter
system, at 543-5298.
