KIM WESTON -- IS HE OUT OF JAIL?
I spoke to Lt. Carter who said that Weston is still in jail. The following
is
another con doing the same sort of thing. Keep in mind that if you
didn't
agree to have someone do a job for you, you have no obligation to pay
them
anything, even if they really did the work. Furthermore, they are trespassing.
Paying these cons after the fact just encourages them. -- KS
Date: 8/7/00 3:49:13 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From: Lshneier@worldbank.org (Lesley Shneier)
Last night, around 9:50 p.m., someone who answers to
Kim Weston's description rang the door-bell and said he had cleaned
my gutters
during the week, and that he had also cleaned the neighbor's gutters.
He has
approached me before, with the same story, and I have (foolishly) paid
him,
and
subsequently discovered the gutters were not cleaned. This time, I
told him
we'd
been warned not to pay him, and refused to talk to him. He left, saying
he had
done the work for nothing. I checked this morning and the gutter
I can see
from
the house had not been cleaned. I just wanted to let you know that
this man
is around, and with another man, somewhat taller, and with shaved head.
Both
were dark skinned.
MORE ON JANNEY STUDENTS AND HOME DEPOT
From: jbmahaffie@coatesandjarratt.com (John B. Mahaffie)
Your correspondent David McMullin noted that Janney Students must
be jaywalking several times a day to get to the afterschool
program at the Eldbrooke Church. In two years of delivering my
child to Janney each morning, I have never once seen the escorted
kids jaywalk. They are walked across at the light at 42nd and
Albemarle by very committed and safety minded adult counselors.
Nevertheless, a change in route might be in order for the safety reasons
that
David McMullin noted in his comments. -- KS
MPD INTERNAL AFFAIRS MOVES
From: owner-d2@this-people.com
The Metropolitan Police Department's Office of Professional
Responsibility, which investigates allegations of police
misconduct and use-of-force incidents, has moved to new
offices outside Police Headquarters, Chief of Police Charles
H. Ramsey announced today. The Professional Responsibility
office, which includes MPD's Office of Internal Affairs and
Force Investigation Team, is now located at 51 N St., NE,
4th Floor.
Ramsey said the new offices provide a neutral site for
citizen complainants, witnesses and police officers to speak
with investigators about specific complaints and ongoing
investigations. "Many people - not just those who have filed complaints,
but
also witnesses and police officers themselves - find it
uncomfortable, even intimidating, to go into a police
facility to discuss matters as sensitive as those handled by
OPR," Ramsey said. "Our Department is committed to making
this process as fair, objective and comfortable as possible
for everyone involved, which is why we have moved this
critical unit out of Headquarters and into a more
neutral location."
Earlier this year, the Chief expanded the focus of the Office of Professional
Responsibility, placing an assistant chief in charge of this
critical function.
The main telephone numbers for the Office of Professional
Responsibility remain the same: 202-727-4385 and
202-724-4269. The office also operates a toll-free
confidential hotline for reporting allegations of police
corruption or official misconduct: 1-800-298-4006.
Information about how citizen complaints are currently filed
and investigated by the MPD can be found on the Police
Department's Web site: www.mpdc.org (click on "Services and
Programs/Citizen Complaints").

ART-O-MATIC
From: Ccv@aol.com (Claudia)
http://www.artomatic.org/default.asp
Washington Art-O-Matic will be located in the former Sears/Hechinger
store at
4500 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. It is a month-long celebration of
the Arts of our
metropolitan area. Last year, more than 350 local artists, including
painters, sculptors, filmmakers, writers, dancers, poets, and musicians,
exhibited work in this all-volunteer effort. This year, given a larger
space
and the partnership with the Cultural Development Corporation, our
target is
500 artists!
The building is open Sat from 10-12 for tours of the space. We've
been
building display units which now give a very rough idea of what the
plan will
look like. the space is being designed by a team of architects
around the
idea of interior boulevards, streets and neighborhoods to wander into
to see
and experience the art. There will be a workshop area for children,
several
stages for performances, and installation areas as well as the 2-d
wall
display on units that will create the walkways.
The event will begin with a VIP Preview Gala on Thursday, September
28, 2000.
Every Saturday night will be opening night at Art-O-Matic until the
closing
Costume Ball on October 28, 2000. Hours: Wednesday through Saturday,
TBA.
Live performances of music, theater, poetry, and dance, as well as
artist
talks, special tours, children's activities, "open studio" programs
and much,
much more will happen throughout the month.
At least 500 area artists in an all-volunteer project being coordinated
by
the Cultural Development Corporation (CuDC). Madison Marquette
Realty
Services is donating use of this mammoth property.
