COMMUNIT-E
August 15, 2000

SOME ITEMS FROM LAST WEEK'S ANC MEETING

For more details about any of these items, contact the relevant agency or one
of the ANC Commissioners. The ANC e-mail addresses are listed on the ANC web
site at http://www.anc3e.org.

1.)  The Commissioners voted to send a request to the DC Office of Historic
Preservation to not consider a request for historic status for the Tenley
Firehouse.  If the historic preservation office declines to consider the
request for historic status, the demolition and rebuilding of the firehouse
can begin. Otherwise, it will be held up pending the historic designation
process.

2.)  The Tenley Library is looking for volunteers to conduct computer
training for adults. The Library number is 282-3090.

3.)  On September 25, there will be either a hearing or roundtable to discuss
an amendment to the Historic Protection Act, at 10 am in Council Chambers.

4.)  On September 11 or 12, there will be a joint ANC3E and ANC3F meeting on
the development at Albemarle and Nebraska. It will probably be at Wilson
High. There will be presentations by the Tenley Neighbors and the developer.
On September 14,  ANC3E will vote on the issue. There will be no further
discussion at the September ANC3E meeting. All discussion will be expected to
have taken place at the September 11 or 12 joint meeting.

5.)  Lt. Mark Carter gave the police report:
---There's a big push on traffic enforcement in PSA 202. Lt. Carter said he,
himself, had issued 50 tickets over the last 20 days. Let him know the
streets where you want to have a special emphasis put on enforcement. His
e-mail address is MPDCPSA202@netscape.net.  Since he gets a lot of e-mail
from residents, he asks you to be patient if he can't get back to you right
away. He also invited the community to go on traffic enforcement ride-alongs
with him. Contact him to set it up.
---If you can't reach Lt. Carter for something, you can also contact Sgt.
Rick Davis on his pager at 202-886-5892.
--- Starting August 20, there will be 20 additional officers throughout 2D
from 8pm to 4am.
--- Lt. Phil Lanciano will do child seat safety checks for you. Call him at
282-0050.

Lt. Carter stressed the importance,  now that children are about to go back
to school, for parents to sit down and talk to them about safety. Relevant
excerpts from his newsletter, on this topic, are at the end of this
Communit-E.

--- He alerted us to a particularly bold con and his partner who are doing
burglaries. One is tall and one short. A woman reported that she walked into
her house and left the door open for a few minutes. One of these guys walked
in behind her, grabbed her purse, which she'd just put down, and ran. This is
really bold and scary. In addition to being alert, and keeping doors locked,
when inside, he also recommended that there be curtains or shades at windows
so that crooks can't "window shop" while going by. He also recommended
outside lights at the back of the house.

--- A particular problem he and his officers are having is that many houses
don't have addresses on the front and on the back. This makes it very hard
for them to find the right address in an emergency. Make sure you have a
street number at both places so the patrol car can easily find the right
house in an emergency.

6.)  There were complaints about the Roundtable bar again. After the
Restaurant closes for the evening, the bar stays open quite late. According
to a resident, drunken patrons are leaving in the wee hours of the morning,
making a lot of noise, urinating and vomiting and so forth. The ANC has filed
a formal protest against the Roundtable.  Lt. Carter has assigned one of his
officers to pay special attention to this spot at their closing time.

The neighbor who brought this complaint would like to borrow a movie camera
to take photos of the situation. If you have one and would be willing to lend
it to her, contact ANC Chair Jill Diskan to find out how to contact this
neighbor. (Sorry, I don't know her name.)

7.) There will be a Walther Family Reunion September 23-24 in Rockville. They
were one of the original Tenleytown families and are related to other
Tenleytown families including: Derrick, Fawcett, Huddleson, Robey, Shoemaker,
Sonnemann. All are welcome. For more information, call Diane Tamayo at
301-424-5106.

FUN RAISER

From:   AMSELINE@aol.com  (Anita Seline)
I wanted to call attention to this event at the business that has been a much
more appropriate replacement to the adult book store on Wisconsin Avenue:
DC Dance Collective, located at 4908 Wisconsin Ave., will hold a "Fun
Raiser" and art festival on Saturday, Sept. 9, celebrating its first year of
business with a chance for people to sample a selection of classes and view
art. The event will benefit a Scholarship and Outreach Program at the
collective.
The studio will hold a Five Dollar Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. where
adults and children over the age of 12 pay $5 to attend any or as many
classes as they wish in tap, ballet, yoga, salsa, jazz and much more.
Children under 12 are free. An art show will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. The
collective's teachers and resident companies will perform from 7 to 9 p.m.
and a party, featuring reggae, techno, jungle, house and hip hop dance will
be held after the teacher performance.
For more information see www.dcdance.com or call 202-362-7244.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

**** From: MGB PA@aol.com (M Beveridge)
I feel very sorry for those who have had problems with
AU students. We have been fortunate, our next door neighbours are
AU students who last week had a party; they notified our whole block
well in advance, in writing, did not make any disturbance and altogether
acted with respect for both the people and the property in our neighborhood.

Another AU issue. For years AU has claimed that the AU swim pool
is open to the community on a membership basis ( part of the "good neighbour
policy").
Not true, and hasn't been for ten years to my knowledge.
Those of us who were members before the exclusion policy went into
effect were systematically forced out. I doubt that any of us still are
members.

I recommend: Maggio Roofing, 6476 Sligo Mill Rd., Takoma Park, MD 20912
301-341-4666, Steve Piccirelli

I had three estimates for the replacement of my flat roof.  Maggio was by far
the most expensive.  But, after discussing all of the elements of the job
with Mr. Piccirelli, the estimator/project manager, I concluded that they
offered the best value.

The other roofers did not provide the detail work required for a roof which
will last.  Its easy to bring in an estimate which appears to be a great
bargain, but when you compare apples to apples, you might find, as I did,
that the more expensive bid is really the cheapest in the long run.  By the
time I added all of the detail work which was included in Maggio's bid to the
other two bids, they ended up being comparably priced.

They are very knowledgeable, very professional, very fast, and they do a
great job.  I was very impressed with them and I recommend them highly.

One caveat:  I don't recommend having them do any trim work.  While they will
do it, they are obviously not finish carpenters.

FYI: an attempt was made last week to steal 2 adult bicycles parked in an open
shed off  the alley between Van Ness and Verplanck [4300 block].  A bolt
cutter
unsuccessfully tried to cut through both chain and padlock, resulting only in
a
destroyed lock.  Go Master Lock!

I apparently have some wasps or bees up in my soffit. Does anyone have the
name of an efficient and not terribly expensive exterminator for such things?
Thanks.

FROM LT. CARTER'S NEWSLETTER:

The school season is almost upon us. The month of August is the time to talk
to your children and reinforce a few basic Safety Tips.  Share these 7 Rules
for Safety with your children:

1. Before I go anywhere, I always check first with my parents or the person
in charge.  I tell them where I am going, how I will get there, who will be
going with me, and when I'll be back.
2. I check first for permission from my parents before getting into a car or
leaving with anyone, even someone I know.  I check first before changing
plans or accepting money, gifts, or drugs without my parents' knowledge.
3. It is safer for me to be with other people when going places or playing
outside.  I always use the "buddy system."
4. I say NO if someone tries to touch me in ways that make me feel
frightened, uncomfortable or confused.  Then I go tell a grown-up I trust
what happened.
5. I know it is not my fault if someone touches me in a way that is not O.K.
I don't have to keep secrets about those touches.
6. I trust my feelings and talk to grown-ups about problems that are too big
for me to handle on my own.  A lot of people care about me and will listen
and believe me. I am not alone.
7. It is never too late to ask for help.  I can keep asking until I get the
help I need.

Remember that our children are our richest treasure and greatest resource,
ensuring their health and welfare can only enrich everyone's lives.

We are enlisting assistance from you to form problem-solving groups.  The
purpose is to attack any community concerns from several angles.  Sound like
something you might want to do! Stop one of the officers on the street and
let him/her know you want to get involved!  NOW IS THE TIME FOR US TO DO IT,
NOT TALK ABOUT IT!
