HOME DEPOT HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS
At last night's ANC meeting, Commissioner Tad DiBiase said that Home
Depot
was concerned about the Hechinger site and the fact that it would be
their
only two-story store (their others are all one-story high). They were
concerned that hardware shoppers would not like using elevators and
escalators. He urged interested residents to call or write Home
Depot
officials to try to encourage them to open a store here. He thought
it could
make a difference if Home Depot heard directly from residents. The
relevant
phone numbers and addresses are:

NEXT MEETING ON FIREHOUSE CANCELLED
The meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 26, on the Firehouse,
has been
cancelled.
UPDATE ON HUGE TOWER
Because it is going to be 756 feet high; may be in violation of the
Federal
Height Act; and there was no environmental impact statement done, the
ANC3E
is asking that:
1.) BZA (zoning) hold a hearing
2.) That an Environmental Impact Statement be done and sent to the
Department
of Health
3.) That the stop-work order not be lifted until the environmental
impact
statement has been completed.
Concerns were raised at the ANC meeting about high levels of radiation
on the
ground in this area and the possible impact of that radiation on our
health.
One resident at the meeting reported that radiation levels on the ground
at
Fessenden and Wisconsin are 5,000 times the background radiation for
DC.
Another reported her physician brother's concern about being around
41st and
Chesapeake for even a short period of time.
I would like to see an epidemiological report, if one exists, on the
number
of cancers and cataracts in this area compared to the rest of the
metropolitan area. Does anyone out there know how to get such a report
or
such an epidemiological study done?
---------
I will save the AU Student and the Roundtable bar items from the ANC
meeting
for the next issue of COMMUNIT-E.

CALL FOR TUTORING HELP!
From: s.pfleeger@ieee.org (Shari Lawrence Pfleeger)
Many thanks to all of you for your support of Urban Rangers. Some
of
you have donated computer equipment, and others have helped out with
tutoring the kids in Adams-Morgan/Columbia Heights to whom Urban Rangers
provides help. And as a neighborhood, you were terrific in supporting
us
on our Fresh Fields 5% day last month -- we raised over $2600!
Now I am writing to see if you are interested in tutoring a student
during
the school year. Many of the kids need help with their homework,
and some
need a lot more: help in learning to read, or in understanding
math
concepts, for example. If you can spare an hour or two a week
to meet
with a student in Adams-Morgan, please let me know. You can reach
me at
202 244-3740, or at s.pfleeger@ieee.org.

Sound of Gunshots?
From: Jcapper@worldbank.org
I recently heard what sounded like shots in the neighborhood - 2 nights
within a
week. Several shots each time. The first time I called
911 to report it.
Does
anyone know if these were real gunshots, and, if so, what was
going on? Is
there any way to find this out? Certainly didn't sound like a
car backfiring.
I live on Van Ness near Wisconsin.
Reply to DC Animal Control Item
From: Bkravetz (Beth Kravetz)
This is in response to the person whose cat was put to sleep by DC
Animal
Control. I am sorry to hear of the loss, but why didn't the cat
have a
collar and ID tag? Even indoor cats sometimes get out, which
is why ALL pets
should have an ID with the owners name, address and telephone numbers.
Reply to Item on Possible School Expansion
From: kayandpaul@erols.com (Kay McClenon)
To the person concerned about the Georgetown Day School possible expansion.
Both Georgetown Day School and the Safeway are built on what, many
years
ago, was known as Harrys' Field, because it belonged to the Harry family.
When the Safeway built at that location, it was my belief that the
Safeway
had a longterm lease on the property, and I assumed that Georgetown
Day
School did also. Before anyone starts accusing the school, it
would be good
to find out who actually owns the land. There are still many
members of the
Harry family and their relatives.
Bee Removal
From: Rubacats@aol.com (Kelly Rubenstein)
Recently, we had wasps colonizing our house and garage. We used
Bio-Logical
Pest Management (202-237-7509). Alan Cohen came, and did a great
job getting
rid of our problem quickly and reasonably. I was a bit concerned
whether the
more "organic" approach would be effective, but Alan was really knowledgeable
and we've been wasp-free ever since.

TREE REMOVAL / REPLACEMENT IN AU PARK
From: CarranoC@howrey.com
I sent the foregoing letter to Mayor Williams regarding the
District's tree removal/replacement policy. Pls feel free to post the
letter
in your next email and ask members of the community to voice their
concerns.
Thank you. Cono
******
Dear Mayor Williams,
This morning District workers marked a tree (one larger than you can
get
your arms around) in my front yard, and then with unparalleled efficiency
cut down it down to the ground. While I am told that tree at issue
may have
been diseased, the District's policy (or execution thereof) is alarming.
Homeowners/taxpayers are entitled to have notice and a genuine opportunity
be heard on issues that substantively affect the character and value
of
their homes and community. In addition, our proactive and responsible
communities simply ought to be afforded greater respect.
If notice were provided in this instance, we would have gladly shouldered
the costs of exploring a second option and a less severe remedy, if
one were
available. Why wasn't our community given an opportunity to save the
tree?
Moreover, the District's tree replacement record is questionable and
it may
take over a year before a replacement tree is planted. Why is
this so?
We appreciate that this isn't the District's highest priority, but ask
that
you find the time to help us with this issue as you have notably and
successfully done with other matters throughout your administration.
Thank
you in advance.
